Daily Doc: refunded taxes on a cancelled flight

Doc Holiday opens his travel clinic on a daily basis to answer your holiday queries. Today: the Doc helps Pam Day with a refund for her daughter

My daughter has decided to extend her holiday in Thailand. She tried to change the date on her Thai Airways ticket, but it wasn’t possible, and so she’s paid for a new one-way flight home with British Airways. Can she get a refund on the unused portion of the Thai Airways ticket, or at least claim back the airport taxes and fuel surcharges? Pam Day, by email

British Airways claims to process refunds in 7-10 days, and bookings made on www.ba.com can have refunds processed online. It can take a good deal longer to receive money back from overseas carriers, but if you booked the ticket with the airline directly and they have an office in the UK, as Thai Airways does, you should contact the local office first – on 0870 6060911, or via www.thaiairways.co.uk
