I understand that it is not possible to fly from the UK to North Cyprus non-stop, but can you tell me about the procedure? Are bags checked through for example, as I am worried it will be a hassle. Arnold Deakin, Oldham
Sunday Times travel expert Richard Green responds: Thanks to the prickly politics on Cyprus, the only non-stop flights to Ercan the airport for the North of Cyprus - are from Turkey.
From the UK, this means that flights touchdown at a Turkish airport, before carrying on to Ercan. Your bags stay onboard the aircraft, as do you, and you are only on the ground for about 45 minutes, so it's all very straightforward.
Cyprus Turkish Airlines (020 79304851) and Pegasus flies to Ercan from Birmingham, Manchester, Gatwick, and Stansted.
However, there is a much bigger choice of flights to Larnaca in the Republic of Cyprus from 18 UK airports in fact. You could get a cheap flight and get a taxi into the north. It costs about £50 from Larnaca to Girne
(Kyrenia) for example. Most hotels can organise a transfer, and some will even pick you up from Paphos, another Cypriot airport with good connections from the UK.
It's worth noting that if you have bought a property in North Cyprus, you should definitely avoid passing through the border with any tell-tell documents on you. Owning property in the north is a big no-no and can land you in some serious bother if the Greek Cypriot authorities come across them as you cross the border.
Bradt (£12.99) publishes the only dedicated guide book to North Cyprus and has useful information on the crossing points.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is a completely safe & beautiful place. There are police and they do have a government although not recognised internationally. A lot of tourists come there now and love it. A note to remember is that Turkish Cypriots are the ones after peace!

Northern Cyprus is a heaven for fugitive criminals, drug dealers and the mafia, because no international police cooperates with this pseudo-state. So you can keep dreaming that its a safe place just because some Turkish people smiled at you trying to convince you to buy a stolen property.

Take no notice of this Greek propaganda, You can fly into Larnaca and it will cost you approx £80 return, There are plenty of good, clean taxi's in the North that will collect and return you to the South. You don't even have to get out of the car as the driver does everything for you . Enjoy yourself

Nth Cyprus is as safe as any western country. property is a contentious issue in the sth, the Annan referendum has null and void any Greek claims to land in the north. the compensation commission handles this with compensation or swap for Turkish land. Enjoy the TRNC, its a great place to visit.

What a wonderful place Norh Cyprus is, and what a wonderful peoplu.
This, despite the Propoganda from the Greek Cypriots who realise they are losing the argument and have been avoiding facing the truth for years.

The sale, purchase or development of all land and property in occupied Cyprus is completely illegal under Cyprus law. Only transfers of land and property between the immediate family of the original owners before the Turkish invasion is allowed by the Cyprus government. Everything else is illegal.

Agememnon why should Mr Deakin fear for his life in N Cyprus it has less crime than most other places included the south, K Tsimon do not forget that Turkeys intervention was to save the lives of the Turkish and Greek cypriots that were being killed by EOKA .
J Moorehead, Aksai, Kazakhstan
Are you implying that all the land in North Cyprus is and was owned by Greek Cypriots? If so I would like to correct you and that land transactions in the North are no different than in the South.
In fact there are Greek Cypriots occupying and working our pre 1974 Turkish Cypriot land on the south.

All fights to occupied Cyprus are completely illegal and violate the Chicago Convention on aviation. Mr Deakin who asked the question should be more worried about loosing his life and putting the lives of people on the ground in danger then about loosing his luggage.

Instead of warning your readers not to carry tell-tell documents of their illegally purchased usurped Greek Cypriot property, inform them that Turkey invaded and occupied N.Cyprus and has been selling off the loot, in defiance of UN resolutions and against the Charter of Human Rights. A refugee.
K.Tsimon, Nicosia, Cyprus
here's an idea, why don't you avoid going to the northern part of cyprus and just stay in the south, where you will have security in knowing that you are covered by eu law and procedures...or you can go to the north and roll the dice....its not like the turks have the best human rights violations
