What will happen at USA Immigration if I arrive with a UK passport with less than 6 months to expiry but with departure tickets that are dated before it expires?
The USA Immigration site suggests there is a bilateral agreement which allows an automatic renewal for 6 months by the authorities. Is this correct? Perry Goodman, by email
Ginny McGrath, Times Online Travel News Editor, responds: As long as your passport is valid through the duration of your stay in the US, you should be fine getting in.
According to the U.S. Embassy in London, the US has an agreement with the UK to automatically extend the validity of a passport for six months past the passport's expiration date. So, as long as you leave before that date, immigration shouldn't be a problem.

Immigration may not be a problem but always check with your airline as they tend to have different rules and if you are on a return ticket you might not even get on the outbound if the airline has it's own rules about the validity of passport.
Just remember the passport fiasco with the well know chef and his family recently, immigration have one set of agreements and airlines sometimes do their own thing, because they can.
