Arriving alone, out of season, on the wildest of Cornish nights, I found Hartswell Farm still proudly displaying its best green credentials.

“Could you kindly try to use just one of the twin beds,” said Wendy Jordan, who has run the 52-acre (21ha) farm and B&B for 19 years with her husband Ron. “It saves on washing — we have our own water supply and drainage.”

The 17th-century Hartswell Farm, part of a nationwide network of farms with rooms (www.farmstay.co.uk), holds a South East Cornwall Acorn award for sustainable farm tourism. As well as using low-energy light bulbs, the Jordans recycle everything from bottles and paper to unwanted power tools. Hartswell also displays its Smoke Free award — smoking is forbidden anywhere on the farm.

Summer visitors follow a farm trail, but even at this time of year I was able to meet some of Ron’s herd of 20 rare- breed red poll cattle and his coop of white bantams. The farmstead, although under-stocked for its size, still teemed with life. Wild pheasants fussed around the lawns and self-catering barn complex, while sparrows chorused from the conifers. A trio of ducks ambled back and forth.

By the time I’d dodged another of the storms that pounded the hills above Lostwithiel, I was ready for breakfast by the french window — granary toast, smoked bacon, sausage, tomatoes, mushrooms and one of Hartswell’s own fresh eggs.

My twin room, of dark oak bedsteads, rocking chair, framed Norman Rockwell prints, books, basket work and TV, was cosy and smart. Watched by the stag’s head in the stairwell, Wendy gave chapter and verse on Lostwithiel’s pubs. I didn’t stay long at the Royal Oak. By 10pm I was sinking fast beneath a pleasingly patterned blue duvet.

Bottom line: Brian Pedley paid £28 B&B (single use of twin room). Couples pay up to £64 B&B in high season.

Sampling the fare: Full farm breakfast.

What we think: Green credentials and comfort — at a budget price. A good base for the Eden Project near by.

Best thing: Wendy.

Worst thing: The electric shower.
