First impressions: perched on a cliff overlooking the sea and the fishing village. Built in 1875, it was a school until 1977.

Setting the scene: Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen helped with the design. The snug (which used to be the headmaster’s office) is filled with blue and cream scatter cushions, wicker chairs and well-loved comfy sofas.

Why it’s special: totally relaxing. Run by Louise Houston, who juggles five children while running a fantastic hotel.

Hitting the sack: there are 14 rooms (four are family rooms with partitioned sleeping areas for the kids). From the Pearl Room watch the fishermen.

Sampling the fare: seafood, naturally. The special is fresh king prawns, clams and langoustines.

Added attractions: walk down the hill into the village and harbour for a pot of cockles and mussels.

The bottom line: doubles and family suites (sleeping up to five) from £60 including breakfast.

What we think: brilliant value for total escapism, good for energetic family groups or couples.
