First impressions

A 13-acre country house estate at the foot of the volcanic hill, Arthur’s Seat. The classically proportioned entrance hall is filled with antiques and portraits.

Why it’s special

Feels like the country, even though central Edinburgh is only a ten-minute drive away.

Ornate ceilings, reception rooms panelled with tapestry, 17th-century tooled leather and early 18th-century art.

Hitting the sack

The 26 bedrooms are carefully refurbished in slightly heavy neo-Gothic purple-and-matt gold schemes, with much satin and velvet, and marble bathrooms.

Sampling the fare

Rhubarb, the restaurant, is candlelit and serves classic seasonal and unpretentious British food; main courses £13 to £24. Set lunch £12.95. There’s a good choice of wines by the glass; great coffee and orange juice at breakfast. This was recently the venue for MTV’s pre-awards dinner, and much applauded by Kylie and friends. New, dedicated banqueting chef will make a big difference in the well-known circular stables function area.

Arthur’s Seat is near enough to walk to (and up); Prestonfield golf course; plus walks around Duddingston Loch.

What we think

Will have to work hard to compete with other very good boutique hotels in more central Edinburgh, but “country” location and fine restaurant may swing it.
