Riki Flutey, the 28-year-old New Zealander, is one of four uncapped players included in Martin Johnson's first elite player squad as England manger but there is no place for Mike Tindall or Ben Kay.
It is thought Johnson hopes Flutey can help establish a new dynamism among the England backs, although the London Wasps back does not qualify for the national team until September under the three-year residency rule.
Jordan Crane, Dylan Hartley and Nick Kennedy have also been included in an England squad for the first time, while Charlie Hodgson is among a number of high-profile absentees after a disappointing tour of New Zealand.
Tindall and Kay have been relegated to the England Saxons squad along with recent Joe Worsley, Michael Lipman, Richard Wigglesworth, Topsy Ojo, David Strettle and Mike Brown, all of whom toured New Zealand. There is no place for Hodgson in either squad.
Josh Lewsey, the Wasps full back, returns to the senior England fold for the first time since the World Cup while Harry Ellis and Lewis Moody, both of Leicester Tigers, return from long-term injuries.
"The priority is to win games, it's as simple as that," Johnson said. "We'll be judged on the results so a lot of thought and detail has gone into the squads. There has been lots to take into consideration with new law changes and, going forward, how we play as a team.
"We need to be playing somewhere near our potential. If we can do that, then we will be competitive, that's our job as coaches: to let these players know what's expected of them.
"We picked certain guys for specific roles, that’s why there are some guys who are in there and some guys who people may have thought would be in there but aren't.
"But that's about how we are going to play as a team, we have an idea of that now, but things change. Right now this is the best 32 we had available to pick."
When asked if he could clarify his job description as England Team Manager,
Johnson said: "I am in charge of the performance of the England rugby
team, I am ultimately responsible for how we play on the field - it's as
simple as that."
Johnson admitted the disappointing tour to New Zealand had played a big part
in the selection. "I don't think there is a tougher task than going to
play New Zealand away at the end of a tough season," he said.
"What did we find out? Some players stood up and competed pretty well at
the top level. We found out something about everyone that went on the tour.
Bits of that have been factored in the squad that we have picked today."
Johnson was keen to stress discipline would form a key part of his regime,
with claims of an alleged rape by four England players of a teenage girl in
Auckland having marred the tour.
"It [discipline] is one of the first things that will be addressed in light of what has happened," he said. "It is something that will be dealt with, the players will be very aware of it, even the guys that weren't there will be aware of what's happened and their responsibilities. They will be under no illusions.
"We trust the people we have picked, they are good characters, they wouldn't be in the squad otherwise. Although the allegations were very, very serious, I regard the 64 people we have picked in these squads are people of very good character."

and furthermore Ben....... unlike the English rugby union sanctioning the buying of NZ born professional rugby players and then.....(wait for it)..... giving them a national jersey!!! On a serious note though Your guys comp allowing kiwis to play is not good for your national team nor good for NZ.
Joseph Stafford, Blenheim, New Zealand
William Brown - there are not 4 fly halves in the squad, there's 1 (wilkinson) and 4 people who can play there in an emergency but have played 99% of their rugby this season at 12.
Geraghty, Flood, Flutey and Barkley may be able to step in and play 10 for their clubs, but not for an international!!
Tom, London, England
What about Topsy?
Conan, queenstown, N.Z.
Why was Cipriani not picked? Or have I missed something?
Dave, Dublin, Ireland
To Ben
The trouble is you have a quick gander instead of a proper look and the answer is the majority of the All blacks including those of Island descent were born in NZ and the majority of those born outside arrived with their migrant Parents as small children and not professional rugby players
Gareth Williams, Powys,
From the relative good nature of the posts here (unlike the past five years) it looks likes Johnno has just about got it right!
Rob, Warfield, England
Well picked with James Simpson Daniel give him a chance to shine for England. He will makes the backs look different! And Josh Lewsey!!! Welcome back, the man is a legend!
Lawrence Fung, Hong Kong,
Harsh on Strettle - one of the most dynamic wings i've seen in a long time and to get nailed after one perfromance when the whole team were getting pummeled in NZ is ... well, harsh.
all the rest - ticketyboo.
julian campbell, esquel, argentina
Peter Richards.....and about time too!
I'd never have Toby Flood in any team I had control over and it has to be said that picking Wilkinson is debatable. Tait...maybe!
However, the forwards pick themselves....perm any eight from the selection and they're all good
Keith, Grantham,
"Does this mean that there are so few good English player that you have to get foreigners...
What a shame!!!"
If you'd have a quick gander at the typical new Zealand team, exactly how mahy of them are born in new Zealand compared with those brought in fromt he Pacific Islands.
ben, Isle of Man,
No Allen. No Lamb. Which team was top of the table at the start of last season? Which team was top at the end of the season. You need an inspirational outside half in the modern game and I dont see one in this list.
Stan, Norwich, Norfolk
Simpson-Daniel is the most creative back. My line up would be Ellis,Capriani, Flutey, Lewsey. Back 3 Sackey & Varndell on the wing and Simpson-Daniel at FB
Glen, Bedford, ENGLAND
No Magnus Lund?
Does MJ hate Sale?
Ben Foden doesn't make the 1st team either.
roger Kingston, york,
how can u say there is only 1 flyhalf!? at last count i had 4 that could play in that position : Riki Flutey , Toby Flood, Olly Barkely, Jonny Wilkinson.....
william Brown, maseru, lesotho
Re: the backs, the critical factor is the best structure, is it for example, CARE/Ellis- Wilco/Flood/GERAGHTY-Sackey- Barkley-Tait- Simpson-Daniel-Loosey? Forget Noon.Tait should be given every encouragement to link up with JS-D/PS/JL and thereby lies success.Tait is England's most creative back.
B I Jones, Southampton, UK
Now sort the coaches out, as Andy Cullen says, elite they are not. Oh and I hope Strettle returns to some sort of form and gets back in, in spite of his poor choices inn NZ!
Dave, Moscow,
sinbad at last!! Please stay fit!
Mike, glos, uk
how can a new zealander play for england? rugby is a joke sport..like cricket where we have a south african as captain
marc, kent, uk
Does this mean that there are so few good English player that you have to get foreigners...
What a shame!!!
Romain, Brighton, UK
Johnno, unless you are appointing a coach to attack other teams rather than limply defending, it won't matter a jot who you pick. The current set of "elite" coaches, aren't.
Andy Cullen, Chelmsford,
Forwards selection looks good, but the backs? 2 scrum halves, 2 wingers (Sackey & Varndell), I stand-off (Wilkinson), 1 fullback (Lewsey) & 8 centres. Where's the balance in that? Oh, and Richards. I nearly forgot.
Simon Bullock, Kings Langley,
Good blend of experience and creativity, surprised Noon got in, but he a good defensive 13. Lets hope JSD remain injury free.
Robert Wilson, Trelewis, UK
Good start
Andrew, Cambridge,
Where have all the Sale players gone? Woe is me....
Ben, Manchester,
