WAKEFIELD Trinity staged a stirring second half fightback to cement their top-six place in engage Super League with a 26-18 victory over Hull Kingston Rovers at a wet and windy Craven Park.
Trailing 18-4 after an hour, Wakefield stunned the home side with some spirited play that brought them four tries in the closing quarter and a win which lifts them to fourth place, their highest position of the season.
Two of the four tries were scored by Brad Drew, the veteran Australian hooker, with centre Ryan Atkins and stand-off Jamie Rooney also claiming tries for Danny Brough to land three conversions. It was little more than Wakefield deserved after the visitors had defied a 10-2 penalty count against them in the first half to reach the interval just 6-4 behind.
Rovers, who had taken the lead with a 30th-minute try by Clint Newton after falling behind to an early score from Damien Blanch, the Wakefield, wing, failed to make the most of the possession their opponents’ indiscipline afforded them.
Tries by Michael Vella, the Hull KR captain, and wing Peter Fox, both converted by Paul Cooke, in the early stages of the second half looked to have put the home side clear only for Wakefield to delight their supporters in a crowd of 8,427. Warrington suffered a nine-try mauling by Catalans Dragons.
The Dragons took a 38-0 half-time lead through scores from Adam Mogg, Casey McGuire, Justin Murphy, John Wilson, Thomas Bosc and Sebastien Raguin. The Wolves fought back bravely in the second half with tries from Chris Riley, Paul Rauhihi and Ben Westwood, but scores for Murphy, Younes Khattabi and Olivier Elima, along with 16 points from Bosc's boot, secured an easy win for the home side.
