Testing conditions over a mile and a half should be ideal for Lion Sands and he is fancied to gain a first group-race success in the Princess of Wales's WBX.com Stakes (3.10) at Newmarket today.
He showed an excellent attitude to wear down Tranquil Tiger in listed company over course and distance on firm ground 12 days ago, leading in the dying strides. This softer surface will bring his stamina more into play and this late-maturing colt can find the necessary improvement to follow up in this higher grade.
Sir Michael Stoute saddles three in a bid to land this race for a fourth time in nine years. Last year's winner, Papal Bull, rates the pick of them. He has his own ideas about the game, but showed that he retains plenty of ability when fourth to Soldier Of Fortune in the Coronation Cup at Epsom on his reappearance.
Few in the TNT July Stakes (2.00) have proved that they can handle cut in the ground and I Am The Best may cause an upset. He did not get the clearest of runs when narrowly beaten on his debut on good to soft ground on the Rowley Mile course and then ruined his chance by racing much too keenly on his next start at Kempton. He hinted at better to come when a staying-on seventh in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, where the firm ground was against him, and is taken to show his true worth back on an easier surface.
The ladbrokes.com Heritage Handicap (2.35) is always ultra-competitive and the form is sure to prove worth following. Feared In Flight, at a massive 40-1 with Ladbrokes and William Hill, rates the each-way value. Third in the group one Racing Post Trophy as a juvenile, he has yet to strike in three starts this season but has shown a solid level of form.
A fair third to Centennial in the Classic Trial at Sandown in April, he failed to last home when fourth to Doctor Fremantle in the Chester Vase and then raced far too keenly having been forced wide from a poor draw in listed company at Royal Ascot last time. Back on a soft surface for the first time since winning a maiden at York last year, he can make his class tell on this first try in handicap company.
The dangers are headed by Dream Desert, who should appreciate this drop in trip after failing to last home when fourth to Colony at Royal Ascot.
Bouguereau can give the Derby form a boost by landing the Bahrain Trophy (1.30). He finished a staying-on ninth to New Approach at Epsom, shaping as though this stiffer test would suit, while he showed that he handles cut in the ground when showing useful form on his first two starts this season. Peter Chapple-Hyam, his trainer, saddled Mr Vegas to win this race three years ago and Bouguereau can repeat the trick.
