The July meeting at Newmarket is one of the highlights of summer, but with heavy rain forecast throughout the day the ability to handle testing conditions is likely to be paramount. Few in the group one UAE Hydra Properties Falmouth Stakes (3.10) fit the bill on that score and Briseida, the German raider, is fancied to cause an upset.
This daughter of Pivotal showed fair form in four starts as a juvenile, but proved a revelation on her reappearance when winning the 1,000 Guineas in her native country in emphatic fashion. That bare form leaves her with something to find in this company, but she remains open to plenty of improvement after just five starts and may well be able to expose the chinks in her rivals' armour. At 10-1 with William Hill and Ladbrokes, she looks decent value to follow in the hoofprints of Proudwings, who took this prize back to Germany in 2001.
Darjina is a worthy favourite on form, most recently just failing to overhaul Haradasun in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot. However, connections have expressed concern that she endured a dreadful trip to Britain, with her ferry being delayed, which resulted in her journey taking more than 16 hours. She may again have to settle for minor honours.
Finsceal Beo is hard to back after being found to be “clinically abnormal” when finishing last of nine at the Curragh just 11 days ago, while testing conditions would not help Infallible's prospects of lasting home. Stronger claims are held by Heaven Sent, who surely would have won the Windsor Forest Stakes at Royal Ascot last time had she been ridden with a little more patience.
None of the eight-strong field for the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cherry Hinton Stakes (2.35) has yet won with cut in the ground, but the Mick Channon-trained Please Sing comes from a family that usually handle the soft and is given a tentative vote. She showed a good attitude to make a winning debut in a fair maiden at Leicester and was then sent off second favourite when disappointing in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot. She lost her chance before the start there, unseating her rider and getting herself into a state.
One who is proven with some ease underfoot is Badweia and she can land the EBF Fillies' Handicap (1.30). A half-sister to the useful Wid, she opened her account over six furlongs at Newbury last time, quickening up in good style to take control and staying on strongly. That form has worked out well, with the second, sixth and seventh winning next time out.
The toteswinger Heritage Handicap (2.00) can go to the progressive Great Charm, who looked a step ahead of the handicapper when beating Dunn'o at Haydock Park on Saturday.
