Why don’t the organisers of Wimbledon do something about the players’ grunting? Such blatant gamesmanship shouldn’t be allowed.
Tim Mickleburgh, Grimsby
The men’s champion at Wimbledon will play between 21 and 35 sets, earning between £36,000 and £62,000 per hour. The women’s champion plays at most 21 sets, but as few as 14, which equates to between £54,000 and £81,000 per hour. That means the women are on around £20,000 per hour more than the men. How does that work?
John Rowley, Bradford
It is time for a change in the England cricket captaincy. Michael Vaughan has been ineffective since his glory in the 2005 Ashes series, and Paul Collingwood has also been ineffective when standing in as captain. We need a good, solid county captain like Chris Adams of Sussex.
Kevin Maguire, Batley
Many of us were delighted that Martin Johnson had the good sense to ignore Stephen Jones’ suggestion to leave out Tait, Flood, Geraghty, Care, Noon and Richards from his selection of backs - they are six of the most talented backs in northern hemisphere rugby. Johnson also had the sense to include Simpson-Daniel.
Charles Quin, Cayman Islands
John Watson finished second in the 1982 F1 world championship, not third (Caught In Time, last week). Indeed, Watson was still in with a chance of winning the title as the championship went down to the last race in Las Vegas. Wattie finished second, but Keke Rosberg of Finland was fifth, securing the points he needed to win the title.
Michael O’Hare, Northwood, Middlesex
Watching golf in America on TV, I was appalled at the number of people shrieking and hooting. When a player’s ball goes into the hole after a good putt, shouting ‘In the hole’ contributes nothing. Perhaps those who are unable to refrain from such behaviour might be presented with a golf ball to suck until play has ended for the day.
Vincent Sudlow, Penhow, South Wales
Euro 2008 was a tremendous success, with the following noticeable by their absence - dissent, time-wasting, two-footed tackles, violent retaliation, and aggression towards referees’ assistants.
Brian Hibbert, Chorley
Some of the matches at Euro 2008 were boring, especially when it came to extra time, so why don’t we play extra time with no offside rule in force, leading to real goals deciding the outcome, rather than penalties?
Kenneth White, Highworth, Wiltshire
Will the summer headlines be ‘United dump overrated Portuguese show pony on Madrid’ or ‘World’s greatest footballer staying at Old Trafford’?
Bob Ellis, Southport
I have grown weary of the Ronaldo soap opera. As a Manchester United fan of more than 60 years, I’ve heard it before. ‘How are we going to manage without Johnny Carey, Bobby Charlton, Denis Law, George Best, Eric Cantona etc.’ But survive and prosper we did because of the spirit within the club.
John Dando, Warrington
During a Euro 2008 match, while hosting the German chancellor Angela Merkel in the next seat, Uefa boss Michel Platini was captured on TV talking on his mobile phone - it was both disappointing behaviour and a bad example.
