I only had a couple of brief encounters with Tommy Burns but like anyone who's been involved in Scottish football I knew the man's reputation, which was well-deserved. It's natural that after someone dies you read loads of positive comments about them but in Tommy's case I'm sure they're all sincere and accurate because he was known as a decent fellow. You only have to look at the variety of jobs he had, often in differing roles, to know that he had plenty of friends in the game. That was testament to his versatility and popularity.
He was a hero at Celtic, where I played for a season in 1991-92, for his playing ability. Every club has its icons and while not a massively successful manager there he was admired for the way he played, the Celtic way: good football but tough and committed, too.

Extracted from a poem (9th and 10th stanza) from Robert Burns our national bard.. The poem is entitled Lament for James, Earl of Glencairn
I thought the fact that he was a Burns too would be fitting - Ian Cunningham
Lament for Tommy, legend of celtic.
'O, why has Worth so short a date,
While villains ripen grey with time!
Must thou, the noble, gen'rous, great,
Fall in bold manhood's hardy prime?
Why did I live to see the day,
A day to me so full of woe?
O, had I met the mortal shaft
Which laid my benefactor low!
'The bridegroom may forget the bride
Was made his wedded wife yestreen;
The monarch may forget the crown
That on his head an hour has been;
The mother may forget the child
That smiles sae sweetly on her knee;
But I'll remember thee, Tommy,
And a' that thou hast done for me.
Ian Cunningham, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
