Fabio Capello hailed a magical performance from Wayne Rooney last night after the Manchester United striker inspired a 3-1 win over Belarus that established a record for England’s best start to a World Cup qualifying campaign.
Rooney won the ball for Steven Gerrard to open the scoring with a 30-yard strike in the first half before finishing off enterprising opponents with a second-half brace that took his tally to five goals in his past three international matches. Capello was keen to emphasise that it was a team performance after England continued their perfect start with their fourth win in four qualifying matches, but even the manager felt moved to single out the contribution of Rooney and his strike partner, Emile Heskey, who created his first goal with a powerful run down the left.
“Rooney is a very important player for us and is playing very well,” Capello said. “He is having a magic time at the moment. I think he can play forward but he can also play on the left or the right. The movement of Rooney and Heskey is very, very good. They are quick, they are strong and they know how to play good football together very well.”
England are five points clear of Croatia and Ukraine at the top of group six, though Capello will not take qualification for granted. The Italian was recruited at £6 million a year to bring back the World Cup from South Africa in two years’ time and acknowledged that it is too early to be getting carried away despite an undeniably impressive start.
After the phoney war of five friendly internationals, when much experimentation appeared to yield relatively little, four competitive matches have brought as many wins, with 14 goals scored and only three conceded. The WAGs may have been banned, but that is unlikely to stop them leafing through holiday brochures for South Africa during the dark midwinter.
“We played a very good game against Belarus,” Capello said. “They played very well in the first half, causing us some problems in midfield. In the second half we played much better. I think, at this moment, we played like a team. It wasn’t about one or two players creating something. It was a team. That was important for us.
“I think it’s a very important victory, but it’s only one step further. This, for me, must be remembered. The next game is in April. We took a very important step. The style, the confidence — we have that confidence now. That’s the most important thing if we want to win.”
Capello’s next task may be to lower expectations, with Rooney reflecting the confidence coursing through the camp by suggesting that England could go on to win all ten group matches. “It would be nice to win all the qualifiers,” Rooney said. “The two most difficult games, in Belarus and Croatia, we have got out of the way and we have managed to come out with maximum points, so I don’t see any reason why we can’t win them all.
“We’ve worked really hard to be in the position we are in and now we’ve got to keep working hard.
“I owe a lot of credit to my team-mates — it was great individual work by Emile for the first goal and a great pass by Stevie for the second. To get three points and 12 from four games is a great boost.”

Just as we criticise all defeats and draws, for once at least praise and applaud our victories. Too much of rationalisation of our victory dampens any enthusiasm and shows us as a nation incapable of reconciling to victory.
Anant, Southampton,
There is a time for S Africa - I hope i shall watch England there - dont forget - The England TEAM is MOST favorite team besides of crse of "home-national" preferences... Thank u for GAME and for David appearance! It was good football!
Vovo, Minsk, Belarus
Watch out for Fergie dumping Tevez in the window and saving a fortune and then then picking uo Heskey for a bargain price..
Alan, Leatherhead, UK
So pleased for Gerrard.
baz, lowestoft,
James in Bath- completely agree, well said.
Tamzin, Manchester, UK
Well done lads, a win is a win.
BUT your passing was often pathetic [except to opponents] and your long, hopeful, balls into empty spaces upfront, mainly out wide was exactly that -- no better than hopeful.
Gerry, Cardiff, uk
Who should play the holding role against the stronger teams? Lampard did ok there for a bit last night but he is not exactly Makelele - I think getting possession, with both gerrard and lampard on the field, will be difficult against a good team.
Rooney is great though -what a talent.
Adam, Edinburgh, Scotland
I was disappointed that Beckham was only on for a few minutes at the end of the game. Surely he is fitter than that!
It made him look like a token gesture, nothing more than a crowd pleaser. He can't possibly be happy with that.
Lynn, Funchal, Portugal
Win all ten qualifiers? Surely the away match in Ukraine will hardly be in the "turkey shoot" category. Though hopefully the home match against Croatia won't be played under the same fraught conditions as the last. (Sorry, folks, for even mentioning that nightmare again.)
peter koeb, aljezur, portugal
What is the all the excitement about and so early?! Belarus (ranked 57), Andorra (186), Kazakhstan (120), Croatia (5). Beat Spain or Brazil first then praise England. Typical hysteria.
Alex, London,
Reality check please!
They just beat Belarus.................that great footballing nation.
Let's not get carried away.
Rob, London, UK
Heskey was brilliant.
For the crucial second goal, he laid it on a plate for Rooney.
A.Knox, Manchester,
Where now are all those who derided Heskey.
I've followed his career since his first matches and, in his way, he's been a forerunner of Rooney.
We must keep the same team and the shape and begin to focus on refinements.
Leigh Vernier, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
In reply to rob from colchester, what are talking about?, Beckham was the only positve factor against Kasikstan, we were rubbish until the last 10 mins when becks came on. Was not very impressed last night, we need to be able to keep the ball against such opposition, at least rooney is playing well.
tom, Ashford, uk
WHOA! Well beaters? Not quite, a fatastic display but not perfect IMHO.
There still remains one question in my mind, why can Lampard play a disciplined holding role and Gerrard cannot? We were alittle fortunate that they didn't have a world class right winger the amount of times Gerrard disappeare
Will, Huntingdon,
Perfect? Time to lower expectations? Based on the performance of England's midfield last night I would not expect them to beat any top class side. They were thoroughly out-passed, as usual, by a Belarus side lacking their only world-class player. Good result but a very patchy perfomance.
MDHinton, Sieradz, Poland
How sweet is that? £6 million a year and Capello's next game's in April? Lubbly jubbly.
Good game, though. Well done England.
Julian, Twickenham, UK
It was lucky that nothing turned on Gerard's miss. It made Illewumo look like a marksman. Not quite in the Diego Forlan class but not far short.
Julius Blumfeld, London,
pete from Birmingham sums up our "X FACTOR" and "HELLO" mag culture where h Beckham is the "star" even when he isnt anywhwere near being worthy of the england team. Now the celebrity footballer is being relgeated to the margins, england appear to be playing progressive football once again, rejoice.
rob, colchester, uk
That's great. Would have been even better to watch it. What has happened to this country when you can't watch a World Cup Qualifier without paying for a stack of satellite providers? Don't even get me started on the cricket. It's the same greed that's wrecking the economy.
James, Bath,
So why couldn't Keegan, Erickson and Maclaren do it?
Simple: they're useless.
Pinkie, London, United Kingdom
Well done England and Rooney. But the Beckham factor is still there, as the Belarus crowd cheered and clapped him when he came on as a late substitute. Even the goal line photographers were spurred into frenzied action to snap the England player in action. Great ambassador for English football.
pete, birmingham, uk
Does everyone still think that Carlos Tevez is way better than Rooney?
