Rio Ferdinand will miss the opening match of England's World Cup qualifying campaign with a back injury.
Fabio Capello, the England manager, confirmed the Manchester United defender was unavailable for the game against Andorra but he is expected to be fit for Wednesday's trip to Croatia.
The match against Andorra in Barcelona is Capello's first competitive match since he took over from Steve McClaren following England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008.
In Ferdinand's absence, Joleon Lescott, Wes Brown or Matthew Upson could step in to partner captain John Terry in central defence.

I doubt he would be ready for wednesday's game against Croatia. A back injury takes a lot of time to reform back to it's natural state. Nevertheless, I'm show the physio's can get that injury sorted.
