Few teams survive the mid-innings loss of three wickets for eight runs in 27 balls and rally to take full batting points but Warwickshire did so under the vigilant influence of Jonathan Trott, whose 181 off 363 balls in seven and a half hours was the centrepiece of an attritional contest.
Trott shared century partnerships for the seventh and eighth wickets with Ian Salisbury and Chris Woakes to impose a target on Derbyshire of 327 to avoid the follow-on and give Warwickshire hope of escaping from the stultifying syndrome of six consecutive championship draws at their headquarters.
Ironically, Trott was dismissed one run short of completing his 1,000 for the summer and owed much to Salisbury, who took responsibility for quick scoring with 64 off 84 balls while his senior partner wended his way to three figures. The inswing of Charl Langeveldt, armed with the new ball, had prompted Warwickshire's earlier difficulties but Derbyshire encountered few in the 22 overs before the close.
Langeveldt, a South Africa Test fast bowler, dismissed both Jim Troughton and Ant Botha leg-before and Tim Ambrose clipped a catch to Dan Redfern at short mid-wicket off Graham Wagg as Warwickshire stumbled from their overnight 209 for three but Trott stood firm and reproduced his stoic efforts of the previous day.
After making 76, he was unmoved when Tom New claimed a catch down the leg side off Langeveldt, who looked unimpressed by the not-out decision. He expressed his feelings with the next ball, a bouncer that forced Trott into swift evasive action.
Trott and Ian Salisbury led the way as Warwickshire plundered 162 runs in the 36-over afternoon session. They shared a 110-run partnership in 26 overs with Trott reaching the fourteenth hundred of his career that spanned almost six hours and included 11 fours.
Jonathan Clare split the stand when Salisbury top-edged an intended hook to New, but their enterprise had illuminated the day. Nayan Doshi, a slow left-arm bowler, had personified economy until Salisbury struck him for two straight sixes and two fours.
Trott strode on, reaching 150 and bringing Warwickshire full batting points with two overs to spare. Woakes, 19, made a championship-best 45 before Warwickshire declared at 476 for nine.
Derbyshire were in need of positive statistics and Chris Rogers provided two when passing 1,000 first-class runs for the season and making an assured half-century from 65 balls. He shared an 83-run unbroken opening partnership with Paul Borrington.
