NORTHAMPTON
(second day of four; Glamorgan won toss)
Lunch
Northamptonshire (93-3) trail Glamorgan (287) by 197 runs.
The morning session was won by neither side after Glamorgan lost their last wicket in the first over of the day but claimed three early Northamptonshire wickets before lunch. For Adam Shantry, who used to play for Northamptonshire, it was a happy return to Wantage Road when he took two wickets in his opening spell against his old club.
Shantry had just been hit for six fours in the space of 16 balls by Niall O’Brien, when he had Stephen Peters caught at first slip for one in the eighth over. In his next over, Shantry swung one back in to trap Rob White lbw for eight. David Sales joined O’Brien to add 44 in 14 overs before the Northamptonshire captain nicked a useful out-swinger from Wharf having made a positive 23. O’Brien reached his 50 just before the interval from 72 balls with eight fours.
Johan van der Wath had claimed the final Glamorgan wicket with the third ball of the morning when he bowled Shantry to claim his third five-wicket haul of the summer and his 40th in total in the LV County Championship this campaign.
Tea
Northamptonshire (188-4) trail Glamorgan (287) by 99 runs
Northamptonshire won the afternoon session, losing only one wicket, but Glamorgan were left to rue dropping Lance Klusener when he had made only 14. The regulation chance, spilled by David Hemp at first slip of Jason Gillespie, proved expensive as the South African went on to complete a 79-ball 50 just before tea.
Klusener and Niall O’Brien had added an unbeaten 85 in 31 overs when tea was taken, with the Irishman moving on to 89, and within sight of his second century of the season against Glamorgan, having already made one in the match at Swansea in May.
The only wicket to fall in the session was taken by Adam Shantry, who had Riki Wessels well caught low down at second slip by Mike Powell. Hemp shuffled his bowlers around thereafter in an attempt to break the partnership but to no avail as the clouds cleared over Wantage Road for the first time in two days.
