Completing 12,000 first-class runs provided a statistical landmark for Darren Maddy, 34, the Warwickshire captain, late of Leicestershire and England, but the day was still imperfect for him. Maddy battled his way to 73, with ten fours, before the promise of his 26th hundred and first against Derbyshire evaporated with an uppish cut off Jonathan Clare that flew to point.
If an albatross flew over the nearby Cannon Hill Park, it would hardly be surprising because Warwickshire, second in the table when the match began and promotion candidates, have endured a dreary run of six consecutive championship draws at their headquarters and have only one win there in two years.
The Derbyshire attack was far from challenging on a pitch devoid of life, but Jonathan Trott was contented, scoring his seventh championship half-century of the summer as Warwickshire systematically accumulated runs. Tony Frost was less assured, losing his wicket to a miscued pull off Wavell Hinds that lobbed to short mid-wicket.
Both teams needed a win to further their promotion ambitions, but Warwickshire seized the initiative after Ian Westwood drove loosely and was well caught by Rikki Clarke at second slip in the sixth over of the morning from Graham Wagg, a former Warwickshire seam bowler. Frost joined Maddy, whose only scoring strokes from the first 40 balls he faced were four boundaries, including two in succession off Wagg.
Half an hour had elapsed before Maddy moved off the mark, but he exploited some overpitched balls while sharing a partnership of 73 in 21 overs with Frost, a wicketkeeper playing as a specialist batsman with Tim Ambrose returning from England duty.
Maddy put on 56 in 20 overs with Trott in far from enjoyable circumstances for Derbyshire. Wagg left the field temporarily after injuring a wrist when attempting to prevent Trott from scoring a boundary, while Dan Redfern, making his first championship appearance of the season, was struck twice, first on the shins by Maddy off the bowling of Nayan Doshi, the left-arm spinner, and then in the groin when retreating to an apparently safer distance from the bat.
Three stoppages for bad light restricted play to 9.3 overs after tea, but the 200 duly arrived through a no-ball from Wagg in the 72nd over. Trott had made 62 off 147 balls, while Jim Troughton's 22 had occupied 82 balls as the pair put together the third consecutive half-century stand of the innings.
