England have named an unchanged side for the first Test against New Zealand starting at Lord's on Thursday.

As a result Matthew Hoggard, dropped after England lost the first Test in New Zealand in March, has failed to regain his place in the team despite being included in a 12-man squad.

James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Ryan Sidebottom will lead the pace attack, with Monty Panesar the spinner.

Michael Vaughan, the England captain, has challenged Hoggard, the popular Yorkshire seam bowler, to keep performing to the peak of his ability and seize his chance when another opportunity arises.

“Hoggy has done everything we could have asked," Vaughan said. "He’s gone back and bowled well for Yorkshire and got wickets, but when we’ve won a series and the guys that have come in and done reasonably well they deserve another opportunity,” said Vaughan.

“They’ve been given that opportunity at Lord’s in front of a lot of people and hopefully they can produce some really good performances.

“Their goal is to try to keep the likes of Hoggard and Harmison out of the side so it’s all there for them - they’ve just got to produce.”

Paul Collingwood, the Durham all-rounder, has passed himself fit following a third injection into his troublesome right shoulder.

"It is going to be the same team that won our last Test in Napier," Vaughan said. "Hopefully it will be a similar performance and a similar result."

Vaughan himself has struggled with the bat since returning from New Zealand and is yet to register a half-century in seven innings for Yorkshire this season, a drought that prompted him to practice at the National Performance Centre in Loughborough this week.

He intends to swap positions in the batting order with Andrew Strauss and come in at number three rather than open as he did unsuccessfully in New Zealand.

“Strauss batted at three in New Zealand and he wants to open and I opened in New Zealand and prefer to bat at three so it’s pretty straightforward,” Vaughan said.

“I didn’t play as well as I could, certainly in that last game in Napier but I look back at the last 12 months and I’ve probably only had two bad games - the last game in Sri Lanka and the last game in New Zealand.”

He added: “I’ve got to play some more consistent cricket and get more consistent scores and batting at number three I believe will help me do that.

“I’ve always preferred batting at three as a captain. My record at three is quite good, certainly last summer when I came back I scored a lot of runs and I’m very confident I can do the same again this summer.”

Meanwhile, Daniel Vettori, the New Zealand captain, has declared himself fit. The left arm spinner had two stitches inserted in his spinning finger last week and has struggled to bowl properly in the build-up to the first match of the series.

However, having spent two days bowling in the nets, he believes he is fit enough to lead his country and has been named in a 12-man squad.

The match at Lord's is the first of a three-Test series.
