Sarah Palin's husband campaigned for years to help get his former brother-in-law kicked off the state police force, newly released affidavits show.
The documents were released as part of the so-called Troopergate Scandal, in which it is alleged the Republican vice presidential nominee abused her position as Governor of Alaska to settle a long-standing family feud
Walter Monegan, Alaska's public safety commissioner, says he was dismissed by Mrs Palin, after refusing to fire Mike Wooten, a trooper involved in a bitter divorce and child custody battle with her sister.
The 52-page document reveals the extraordinary level of access Todd Palin, nicknamed the 'First Dude of Alaska ' , had to top state officials, more than a dozen of whom he contacted directly to complain about the trooper.
In his sworn statement to legislative investigators, released yesterday, Mr Palin is unapologetic about his efforts to get Mr Wooten fired, but denied his crusade had anything to do with the dismissal of Mr Monegan.
He described his former brother-in-law, Mr Wooten, as a violent, unstable man who threatened the family's safety, used a stun gun on his stepson and unfairly collected disability benefit.
He said he was frustrated that Wooten kept his job and complained to senior officials in his wife's administration. He complained to his wife so much, he said, she told him to drop it.
He said: “I had hundreds of conversations and communications about Trooper Wooten over the last several years with my family, with friends, with colleagues and with just about everyone I could - including government officials."
"I talked about Wooten so much over the years that my wife told me to stop talking about it with her."
Describing talks he had with one of his wife’s aides, Mr Palin said: “We had a lot of conversations about a guy who threatened my family and verbally assaulted my daughter. We talked about my concerns. We talked about Wooten possibly pulling over one of my kids to frame them, like throwing a bag of dope in the back seat just to frame a Palin."
However, he insisted that by taking his concerns to Mr Monegan he was simply following the regular instructions for making a complaint about troopers.
"There is absolutely nothing improper about lodging concerns about Trooper Wooten with Monegan or his predecessor - complaints about State Troopers are supposed to go to the Commissioner," he said.
"I make no apologies for wanting to protect my family and wanting to publicise the injustice of a violent trooper keeping his badge and abusing the worker compensation system. The real investigation that needs to be conducted for the best interests of the public at large is the Department of Public Safety's unwillingness to discipline its own.
"Anyone who knows Sarah knows she is the governor and she calls the shots."
Mrs Palin had been resisting a subpoena by lawmakers looking into Mr Monegan's firing since mid-September. She initially said she would co-operate with the investigation, but changed her mind after being announced as the surprise running mate on the McCain ticket.
However, her husband agreed to answer written questions submitted through his lawyer.
The Alaska Governor insists she fired Mr Monegan over a budget dispute.
Nevertheless, the investigation has been a distraction for the Arizona senator’s presidential campaign. Republican efforts to halt the investigation were thwarted last night by Alaska State's Supreme Court and the report on the case will be released today.

The question is not whether Gov Palin abused her
power but why was her brother-in-law still a trooper.
He tasered his step son., drank on the job, shot a moose out of season. He has been married four times. Gov. Palen sister was number 3.
Is this the man you want protecting you.
Roger, Minneapolis, USA
The constant abuse of power within political positions has run rampant and in most cases reaps no consequences against the abuser. The time is now that all public officials be held accountable for their misuse of power. Perhaps the country would be a better place as a result.
Mary, Orlando, USA
I believe Sara Palin did abuse her guvinatorial powers. I believe Todd has more access than in the Palin administration than is legal for a spouse to have. I believe Todd was upset that Monegan would not fire the Trooper at his request so he set his vendictive sights on him.
Ian, NY,
Funny how people like Palin can see all the evil in other people but none in themselves.
What Palin did was equally or more wrong than anything Wooten did.
We don't need people like the Palin's in positions of authority. They don't have the right character and integerity to use properly.
Paul, Toronto, Canada
McCain knew about this before he selected her as V.P.
John McCain is looking for his integrity. Shame on him. Shame on Sarah Palin.
The best thing he can do is start telling the truth about Obama and heal the wounds he has caused. We don't need an internal war, whether it be civil or uncivil.
KeithNewman, Philadelphia, United States
I don't blame The Palin's for trying to protect their families. But there are ways to do it and being in a position of power and abusing it is not the correct way morally or legally. If it is true then I hope they get their come uppance, as much as the cop does if he has done wrong also.
Jonski, Liverpool, UK
This is something that the McCain camp is trying to get swept away..my compliments to those in Alaska who are not bullied by them and are seeking the truth.
Don Bess, San Diego, USA
Palin was being investigated prior to the election- so it's absurd to say that this was simply dreamed up by democrats....and Obama has been forthright and CNN and others have looked into his relationships, and they foudn nothing. He served on a board with the guy for a school. McCain and Keating?
Kristin Thompson, portland, u.s.
As I read article after article. I am convinced as I had feared all along. This elections has really come down to race "again" in America! No one wil say it but just listen to overtones and the pettyness of it all. Dear GOD can we just get American back on track and refocus on the issues?
quintine, dallas, us
It's the age old question: if she has nothing to hide, why is she refusiing to cooperate? If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...
C Barbre, Jackson MO, USA
If the facts are as Todd Palin has tried to explain, why on earth is Sarah Palin resisting a subpoena? Everyone would understand Palin's frustration and as long as the Palin family used the same avenues normal citizens of Alaska were able to take to protect themselves, there is absolutely no story.
Bee, London,
Why is the press trying to make her appear as if she has abused her position when her husband was taking a stand that most people would take if they were in that situation? The real question should be is why the national press not demanding that Obama come clean with his questionable associates?!
WTaylor, London, UK
There is no abuse of power. Monegan neither took action about a bad cop nor did he take orders as a subordinate. He deserved to be fired. Palin was cooperating with the Alaska Personnel Board set up for ethics investigations. French wants to drag her through the political mud. I say enough!
lawhite, Idaho, US
The guy wasn't arrested for drunk driving, and the threat he made was never proven. The taser thing isn't even nearly as bad as it sounds.
THAT is why he got a 5 day suspension only.
Dero, Greenville,
Wooten is clearly an unpleasant individual, but that wasn't an excuse to push out the man who refused to fire him.
This was a clear breach of executive power, very Cheney-esque. Doesn't bode well for Palin's temprement as vice-president.
Owen, London, UK
Who cares, they aren't going to win anyway.

Man I tell you, where's all that anti-cop rhetoric out of the left when we need it?
Steve, Crete, IL, USA
She has alot of nerve to say whos qualified? oh by the way i have bacholars in nursing from one school. so maybe ill run for vp.
shawna, kansas city, usa
This trooper tasered his 8 year old son, was arrested for driving drunk and publicly said he was going to kill the Palin family. For this he got a 5 day suspension from a superior who disliked Gov Palin and refused to take her orders on other matters. I don't blame the Palins for fighting back.
Ed, New Braunfels , USA
Claudia - Todd's former brother-in-law may have been a "corrupt police officer" but that in no way, shape, or form gives the Palins the authority to abuse power, which is exactly what they did.
Marian, Dubuque , USA
Palin and Sen. Stevens have cracked the ice in Alaska are just two of many ice-holes in Alaska . . . maybe it's global warming ?
Gery Bargen, Medford,OR, USA
Good for Todd Palin for wanting to protect his family. There are too many corrupt police officers left on the force and I'm glad he took a stance.
Claudia , Atlanta, usa
So more examples of despicable conduct from the Palin clan come out. Todd Palin misusing the authority granted to his wife to grind an axe. He's the same clown who was a member of the AIP, a violent, right-wing organization bent on breaking up the United States of America.
William Buddusky, Los Angeles,
By golly, this sounds so like the stuff that dubya and his relatives used to get up to when he was governor of Texas (and later) and look how well he turned out.
dhome, sydney, australia
I am fed up with these types of abuses of power! Palin and Bush must have gone to the same school of corruption.
sji, Billings, US
It's obvious Todd is taking the fall for all this to save Sarah. Why would Todd as brother-in-law be involved in this while Sarah the Barracuda is sitting on the sidelines when it's her sister that's involved? It just doesn't add up.
Kristy, Pocatello, USA
Does Todd Palin think people are stupid? He is just as
silly as his wife. The e-mails will show what Sarah Palin
was trying to do and she obstructed justice when she
did it. She tells Barack Obama to come clean and look
what she does? She is trying to hide and stall this in-
vestigation.
Jenny Edels, Columbus, USA
Good! I hope the findings show evidence to her abuse of power. We've had enough of these unethical characters abusing our constitution over the past eight years.
