Osama bin Laden added his voice to the birthday messages accompanying Israel's 60th anniversary, vowing to fight on in the name of the Palestinian cause which he said was of primary concern to all Muslims.
As President Bush left Israel's anniversary celebrations with effusive pledges of US support for the Jewish state, the al-Qaeda leader chipped in with own analysis of the intractable conflict, saying it was one of the principle reasons he had turned to jihad as a young man.
“To Western nations ... this speech is to understand the core reason of the war between our civilisation and your civilisations. I mean the Palestinian cause,” said Bin Laden in a message that lasted almost ten minutes. “The Palestinian cause is the major issue for my nation. It was an important element in fuelling me from the beginning and the 19 others with a great motive to fight for those subjected to injustice and the oppressed,” he said, referring to the terrorists who hijacked four passenger aircraft in September 2001 to attack Washington and New York.
“Sixty years ago, the Israeli state didn't exist. Instead, it was established on the land of Palestine raped by force,” Bin Laden said. “Israelis are occupying invaders whom we should fight.” He is thought to be hiding out in tribal lands on the Pakistan-Afghan border.
Most Palestinians have rejected Bin Laden's claims to be fighting in their name, insisting that while al-Qaeda is killing people to recreate the medieval Caliphate, the vast Muslim empire that finally collapsed with the fall of the Ottomans at the end of the First World War, they simply want a homeland.
Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian President currently negotiating peace talks with Israel, recently gave warning that al-Qaeda was moving into the Gaza Strip, which is run by his rivals Hamas. The Islamist movement swiftly denied the claim and insists it has no links to al-Qaeda.
Bin Laden, who has claimed in the past to be fighting on the Palestinians' behalf, said the struggle would not stop. “We will continue, God permitting, the fight against the Israelis and their allies ... and will not give up a single inch of Palestine as long as there is one true Muslim on Earth,” he said in the message, his third this year, posted on an Islamist website.
The al-Qaeda leader said the Western media had spent decades brainwashing people by “portraying the Jewish invaders, the occupiers of our land, as the victims while it portrayed us as the terrorists”.

History did not begin last friday..When will the arabs realise that they are decendants of roman garrisons placed there to kee order after the destruction of the second temple by the romans.
cress, cape town,
Usama thinks that he can convert everyone to the Muslim faith, by terrorizing any who doesn't convert to worshipping Allah. What hypocricy to use threat of force to demand that anyone join any religion. Peace is the reason for any religion, after all. God, the God of Abraham, doesn't demand that.
Cyunthia L., Middleton, United States
No Moslem is against Jews because of their religion, Moslems are against Zionists who invaded Palestine and humiliated its people for sixty years so far under cover of Judaism. To be a Moslem, you MUST recognize and appreciate Mohammad, Jesses and Mosses and ALL their holy books.
saleh darwish, Amman, Jordan
It seems to me that blair was right when he said islam is a religion of peace, but it seem to come accross by the people who represent it as a religion of depravity and barbarity calling for the killing destroying and murdering of other faiths, perhaps the supporters of iran etc can help me out here

"...and whether we like it or not, the coming into being of a Jewish State in Palestine" -- Sir Winston Churchill
Thanks Rachel, LOS ANGELES. Sir Winston's quote no doubt clearly states that the "Jewish State" was built upon Palestine. The only way that is possible is by ethnic cleansing goyims.
jayil, london, uk
I think people worldwide greatly underestimate support for Osama Bin Laden amongst the muslims. If you was to take a secret vote amongst muslims now, he would win it hands down with Irans' Ahmadinejad in second place...because they both stand up to America who is perceived as the devil.
Tom, London, UK
Here is Churchill on the Zionists/Jews which may clear the bias and distortion in James Hider:'s as reported above:
and whether we like it or not, the coming into being of a Jewish State in Palestine is an event in world history to be viewed in the perspective, not of a generation or a century, but in the perspective of a thousand, two thousand or even three thousand years This is an event in world history Sir Winston Churchill* (Martin Gilbert, Churchill and the Jews)
Some people like Jews and some do not, but no thoughtful man can doubt the fact that they are beyond all question the most formidable and the most remarkable race which has ever appeared in the world. (Martin Gilbert, Churchill and the Jews)
Rachel, LOS ANGELES,
bin Laden's original declaration of war against the US in 1996 was almost silent on the conflict in Palestine. His principal complaint was that US troops were permitted in Saudi Arabia to guard against an Iraqi invasion, and that secular law had been substituted for shar'ia law in Saudi Arabia.
Wallace Edward Brand, Alexandria, VA, US
The U.S. and UK governments betrayed us - they lied. Now we have to live with the legacy of the Blair and Bush administrations. Countless British and American soldiers dead, and for what!? Our freedom, our civil liberty? In my opinion the biggest terrorist is the United States of America.
Pull the Troops Out, Edinburgh, Scotland
There's no hate, simply the truth. I'm sure we would have got the same message from Churchill had the Germans invaded Britain.
Sid, london,
The Arabs have a saying: "The dog barks, but the caravan moves on." Bark, bin Laden ...
Harry Fisher, Los Angeles, CA, USA
I think he is right! not in actions but in his words palestine should be freed of the Israeli occupation. This is been going on way to long. Break down the wall and live together as neighbours not as arch enemies! Power to the peacefull!!
Jasper, armagh, UK
So Osama finally figured out after 7 years that his best chance of PR sucess is to blame Israel for his cowardly attack of 9-11 and the ongoing war. Mazel Tov. Of course the media is dutifully reporting it without questioning the fact that he hardly ever mentioned it as a factor before or for years after 9-11. Like a typical politician he sticks his finger in the wind and thinks that Israel is so controversial to so many (thanks to the world media) that he will latch on to win support. How obvious! Well at least he's got Carter's vote.
Noah Glass, Huntington, WV, USA
So that makes two of them: Bin Laden AND Bush, two self-serving fantasists with more money than sense, locked in their black-and-white bubble universe where they are always right....each living in their own "Land of Cockaigne". And both have the chuzpe to claim they're supported by God.
Julia Iskandar, London, England
Why is this news? bin Ladin is being boringly predictable, as always. What would anyone expect him to say? "Happy Birthday, Israel!"? He should be ignored by the media rather than given the space and attention he craves.
Douglas Haire, Sebring, Florida, USA
funny how bin laden escaped at just the right moment & how he now keeps resurfacing whenever america or israel needs a bogeyman to justify warmongering
hugues da mousse, Chapel Hill,
If terrorism is the killing of innocent civilians for political reasons, then the biggest and most successful terrorists are the USA and Israel. Osama is not even in the same league as them.
Abu haadiya, Bradford, Uk
Bin Laden uses any means neccessary to justify religious bigotry. U.S and British foreign policy have provoked them. .We are now entrenched and this war will likely carry on for decades and escalate, for every muslim child killed another bin lade, for each gi a new western soldier, and who benefits?
jim, bristol, avon
This, if it really IS Bin Laden speaking, is just pathetic. How does he think that hurling planes at tower blocks and killing some 3,000 people (far less than die in the average earthquake) is going to "liberate" Palestine? Reminds me of the fatuous "revolutionaries" of May 68. Equally ineffectual!
JF, Canterbury, UK
An audio tape!
Doesn't he have a video camera? Even if he is living in a cave it's still 2008.
I wonder if we'll get another message just before the presidential elections.
Mark, London,
Until someone proves otherwise, I'll continue to assume he's dead.
Alan, Edinburgh,
Bin Laden is no worry to us. He does not even talk with any credibility and just issues empty threats from his hole somewhere. He is not even admired by the majority of fellow Arabs even though they may have no liking for ISRAEL
