Tropical storm leaves seven dead in Taiwan

A powerful tropical storm killed at least seven people in Taiwan and washed away six others in raging waters.

The storm, called Kalmaegi, lashed the south of the country with torrential rain yesterday, triggering flash floods and landslides.

The Disaster Relief Centre said that a woman was rescued from a house buried in a landslide but her one-year-old daughter and a brother died.

A soldier was killed after falling into a drainage ditch in Taichung, central Taiwan, the centre said.

Four people drowned and four others were washed away by floodwaters in Kaohsiung and Tainan, also in southern Taiwan.

A man and a woman were missing after the police motorboat that rescued them from their home overturned in floodwaters in Tainan county. Three rescuers were pulled from the waters unharmed.

Officials said that parts of the south had recorded up to 44 inches (112cm) of rain in the past 24 hours.

Kalmaegi is the Korean word for sea gull. (AP)
