Is it still possible to stopover in Iceland on the way to New York? Dan
Kavanagh, Guildford
Doc Holiday responds: Yes it is, and on the way to other US
cities too. First for New York though: Icelandair
(0870 7874020) has fares from Heathrow, including a stopover in Reykjavik,
from £274. You can stop in Iceland for up to seven nights, and it doesn’t
matter whether the stop is on the way out, on the way back, or even in both
directions. The airline offers special stopover deals across a range of
hotels in Iceland too, from £30pp per night including breakfast.
Icelandair has the same stopover options are available on its flights to
Boston and Baltimore, also starting at £274, Minneapolis-St Paul (from
£324), Orlando (from £347), and San Francisco (from £394).
And Iceland may not be quite as expensive as you think. The FlyBus
transfer from the airport to your hotel is £11, you can eat at a trendy cafe
from £12 per main dish, and a beer in a bar along the happening Laugavegur
is about £4 a pint. And companies are very used to stopover passengers too.
One of the mini tours with Reykjavik Excursions
for example, will collect you from your hotel, take you for a dip in the
Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, and then drop you off at the airport in time for
your flight on to the States, for £24.
