Times Travel often extols the virtues of Travelodge and Premier Inn. However, my wife and I frequently spend weekends at the Premier Inn Kings Cross or Euston and on every occasion we have paid significantly more than the advertised room rate because of “an event in the area”. Are we just unlucky or is it a scam? Keith and Alison Price, via email
Times Travel expert Julia Brookes responds: It's not a scam - many hotels do this and are simply responding to the laws of supply and demand. A spokesman for Premier Inn said that it operates a fixed pricing policy across all of its hotels, whereby the same rate is charged for every room in a hotel on a particular night.
If a large event is taking place within the area of a Premier Inn hotel, a “transparent event premium” is charged and is included in the total price quoted on booking. This is capped at £40.
Given the number of large events in Central London, it's not surprising that the advertised room rate is hard to get - and the opening of Eurostar at St Pancras means that it's often hard to get a room at all.

It IS possible to get good deals at Travelodge, but you do have to be on the ball regarding room sales, special promotions etc... I paid £57 in total for a double room for 3 nights at the King's Cross Travelodge in December!
Kate, Utrecht,
I always thought that being asked by a hotel to fill in a "satisfaction survey" was just a ruse on their part to get names onto their mailing lists. Imagine my delight and surprise when after a lovely Christmas stay at Celtic Manor in Wales, I filled in one of the surveys to while away time by the fire in their lounge, and actually won a luxury weekend for two at the hotel. A recorded delivery letter brought me this amazing piece of news and I am now looking forward to spending a weekend there in February. (And no, there aren't so many restrictions on the prize that it isn't worth taking) So, take heart travellers, filling in these things really does pay off - well done and full marks to Celtic Manor (which I would thoroughly recommend to everyone!)
Have any other readers had similar good luck, or is this just a one off?
