Before the new year a group of 15 friends met for a reunion in Barcelona. Three of us had our pockets picked and another had a handbag stolen. Four out of 15, over four days - were we unlucky? Careless? Or is Barcelona the pickpocket capital of the world? Kevin Ryan, via e-mail
Times Travel expert Julia Brookes responds: Barcelona is a relatively safe city, but it has a problem with pickpockets year-round and the local police are unlikely to give you more than a sympathetic smile when you report your loss for insurance purposes.
You may only have been careless in that you looked like tourists and let your attention wander while sauntering up the Ramblas.
The website www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com has tips on how to thwart pickpockets, including dressing like a local. Money belts are a good idea in any big city, as is carrying only as much cash as you need that day.

Having just come back from Barca myself, I would like to answer that question posed by Kevin. The answer is Yes.
Barcelona is Pickpocket Capital of the World. Myself and
my daughter were targetted twice that we know of within a few hours in the Las Ramblas area.
Caroline Sharp, Northumberland,
Spain seems to be pretty dodgy for pickpocketing - our family was targetted 3 times within 5 hours in Madrid once (the 3rd time they were unlucky as we had nothing left on us to steal).
