We hired a car in Faro from Europcar. During our rental, we hit a pothole that deflated a tyre and caused a dent on the alloy wheel. I took the wheel to a tyre centre, which charged me €10 to repair it and change the tyre for the spare. I read Europcar’s terms and the minimum it charges for tyre damage is €100, and for wheel damage €250. I saved €340 (£230) by getting it fixed myself. How can Europcar justify this? Europcar replies: “To ensure safety, we rely on approved and trustworthy suppliers and repairers. Although they may not always be the cheapest, we believe that the customer’s safety is worth “the extra penny”. Our terms and conditions state that repairs can only be completed with Europcar’s prior agreement. There may even be a question of liability in the event of an accident occurring after a repair initiated by a hirer at a nonapproved establishment. Finally, taking a vehicle for repairs takes time and personnel, which entails cost. Your reader looked at the pure repair cost, but if he factored in his time, perhaps he would see the costs in a different light.”

You are renting a vehicle not a DVD, of course there is going to be a deposit, and if everyone actually read the terms and conditions there would be alot less problems also, the reservations clerk is probably in a call centre in Kathmandu. just like everyone, wants everything for nothing. moan moan

I booked and paid for a car ,from europcar in Malta for a car to be collected from Brussels airport. On collecting the car from the airport i was asked for my credit card, of which they took a photocopy,. and was offered extra insurance which i refused, as the car was fully insured. Cut a long story short, when i received my credit card statement , i found that they took 66 euros. When i complained to europcar in Malta , where i did the original booking, i was told over a period of a few weeks that they are getting no reply from europcar in Brussels to the emails they where sending regard the extra 66 euros they charged me. When they finally answered, i was told that i had asked for extra insurance, which i disagree. MY credit card company refunded me the money taken without my consent.

.. customerâs safety is worth âthe extra pennyâ ? Do you mean extra hundreds of pounds?

I wouldnt trust Europcar for one moment. I booked a car for a relative conditional upon satnav being available, at extra cost. they insisted on my credit card details for the reservation on the proviso that I would not be charged. the relative paid on their credit card, and I was also charged, and the satnav wasnt fitted, none available according to the desk clerk. The telephone booking clerk had not recorded this as a condition of hire. Service and fairness are alien concepts to Europcar
