First impressions: this pub-with-rooms is in a low-beamed barn, converted with restraint but still sporting some serious agricultural implements as décor. The horseshoe bar has a pool table, a television and a restaurant area.

Why it’s special: great walks: Croyde’s family-friendly, panoramic golden sands and exciting rockpools are a ten-minute stroll away. The South-West Coast Path, which runs 500 miles altogether, loops into Croyde before snaking around the sharp peninsular cliffs enclosing the bay. Surfing kit can be hired at The Thatch.

Hitting the sack: modest, but bright and clean rooms — the three in the cottage opposite The Thatch are slightly quieter than those above the pub.

Sampling the fare: scrumptious Devonshire steak pie (£8) and tequila cod (£10) among the specials on the otherwise standard pub menu. Plus monster plates of nachos with barbecue chicken and bacon (£6). A couple of pints of real ale amply restored spirits after a blustery walk.

Access all areas: none of the rooms are suitable for wheelchair users.

Added attraction: excellent full or continental breakfasts are served until 11am, allowing plenty of time for a swim beforehand, or an appetite-whetting jog out to Baggy Point.

What we think: buzzy, young atmosphere, a friendly base for family fun. Surf, sand and hilltop walks.

Bottom line: B&B £45-£60, some en suite (£60).
