First impressions: beautiful Purbeck stone house, built as a family home in an “E” shape in the 16th century in honour of Good Queen Bess, in one of Dorset’s most picturesque villages. Cosy traditional decor in jewel-bright colours, oak panelling, comfy sofas and real fires.
Why it’s special: history and fine dining; have a look at the original carvings in the Oak Room, done by Indonesian sailors, and the cannonball in the bar, used in the siege of Corfe Castle by Cromwell’s forces in 1644.
Hitting the sack: there are 17 well-appointed country-house style bedrooms; the Elizabethan room is large, with a four-poster bed and whirlpool bath big enough for two; quieter rooms are away from reception.
Sampling the fare: gold and green dining room serving a £37.50 menu, including king prawn ravioli with chive butter, pot-roasted partridge with baby turnips and pea purée, glazed lemon and lime tart with chocolate chip ice-cream. Wine list reasonably priced with good house selection.
Access all areas: the Dacomb rooms are two pretty custom-built cottages for the disabled, with wheelchair access and private terrace.
Added attractions: secluded terrace with carp-filled pond; spectacular clifftop walks and lovely beaches. The Swanage Steam Railway also chugs past the hotel.
What we think: pricey but the best place to stay in the area, especially if you’re a walker.
Bottom line: doubles from £126, suites from £190. With a Hibernation Break (until March), dinner costs £10pp for two or more nights.
