JOHN and June (not their real names) met on a dating website. How do I know? Because they told me all about it - through the paper-thin walls - at Butlins in Bognor Regis.
I also now know that June didn't enjoy “the hassles” in Egypt, whereas Vegas was “lovely, you'd like Vegas, John”. June also enjoyed Pompeii, where “you can see how they were before the eruption. Oh, my God, the looks on their faces, John.”
This conversation went on and on. Occasionally John piped up. “I saw a lad peeing off the balcony above us earlier,” he remarked before discussing a previous date: “She couldn't handle her drink. Once she kept on puking. All evening... and in the morning. It was disgusting, June.”
All this was related at 3.15am on a Saturday in a chalet on Barracuda Place on a “We love the 1970s” over-18s “adult break”.
John and June woke me up. I'd been asleep (the only time I really enjoyed Butlins) since midnight. Earlier in the evening I had watched Boney M perform Ma Baker and their catchy No 1 hit Rivers of Babylon.
The show had taken place in a cavernous room full of people dressed as Roman soldiers, schoolgirls, superheroes and African-American disco stars with Afro wigs. People wore T-shirts that said: “Tour Rules Apply”, “Anj - Maid of Honour”, and “Piggy's Stag Do, 2008”.
Sipping wine poured from a tap into smeared plastic glasses, my fellow sufferer and I sat next to a bald best man with an obscenity scrawled across his forehead, and a groom-to-be wearing a shirt covered in graffiti of the “I take it up the ***” variety.
Our table was sticky with spilt drink and covered in empty shot bottles (three for £5). The carpet looked as though someone had been sick on it.
I suppose we should have known what to expect on a “We love the 1970s” break at Butlins, but the sheer scale of the raucousness - and I came with an open mind - was a complete surprise.
So did the “chalet”. I could have booked a room at the fancy on-site Shoreline Hotel (£63pp a night), but I wanted a more real Butlins experience. And boy was it real.
The chalet was in a row of POW-style blocks. It didn't have towels or soap. “You can buy those,” said a “guest relations” woman. And I won't go into the other sounds coming from John and June at 5.30am.
The food was boring. The atmosphere felt threatening. I overheard racist comments from a visitor referring to “the blacks”. Many people seemed drunk.

I last went to Butlins Bognor Regis in 1967 and the very pleasant chap at the front gate when arriving quipped,"I think you'll find it has changed a lot since then!"
Sorry, I think you'll find it hasn't changed a bit!!!!!
However, despite the dire experience , I must say the staff were excellent.

Went on a similar weekend and I know exactly where this article is coming from! Uninhabitable chalet which stunk of cigarette smoke and worse, inedible lukewarm buffet food, wait of almost an hour at the bar, dj plays same songs over and over, scary place full of groping chavs. NEVER AGAIN

Butlins "threatening"?,,,,, I cant believe it. Myself and large group of friends have been going to Bultins for 14 years 2-3 times a year and never encountered bad behaviour. Try the experience with large group of friends, its always more fun.

I have just returned from a 70's weekend in at Butlin's Skegness, the gold accomodation was excellent, very well equipped and clean, the atmosphere was terrific, most people were in fancy dress, everyone was friendly. i can recomend the adult weekends.

We booked an inexpensive short break in Gold accommodation at Skegness. It reminded me of family holidays in the 60's and our child enjoyed it. The New England style chalets are acceptable and in a quiet location. Yacht Club Meals are cheap and cheerful with lots of variety. Jamie's next project?

I went to a Butlins weekend recently and it was great. Not sure what this mystery person was going on about. Yes people were dressed up for some of the events and a few people were a bit drunk, but its just like a festival and actually the accomadation is fine not 5* but then they didn't promise 5*

I just got back from an adults only break myself but at minehead! I can safely say that this mystery guest had a very similar experience to me infact I found myself agreeing with nearly everything said! Going to Butlins is fine but stay away from the adult only breaks if you actually want to sleep

This article brought my one experience of Butlins (Minehead 1992) flooding back to me. Chalet okay, everything else completely dire. So called 'Gala Dinner' included warm white wine already poured into white plastic cups when we arrived at the bench tables. AND we had my husband's mother with us.

I took my parents to Butlins, Bognor regis at christmas time ( they are 74 and 84 years old. We had brillant time. Chalet, staff, food all excellant. Only complaint noise level of entertainment bit loud even for me. My first visit to butlins Bognor and would return. Recommend christmas stay brill
