Stories and Songs on today's free French CD, with The Times
First impressions: unassuming building squirrelled away in the lanes near Winchester College and the cathedral. It opens into a warren of two bars, three open fires, two dining rooms and a ton of memorabilia.
Why it’s special: it has, justifiably, won every award going for remaining a great, 250-year-old Georgian pub which also happens to serve Michelin-rated food. Check out the graffiti on the former college desks that serve as tables - Willie Whitelaw’s exemplary effort is pictured.
Hitting the sack: seven rooms upstairs and seven more over the road: the pub rooms are the most spacious. Comfortable in a 1960s way.
Sampling the fare: you have to reserve a table and it’s worth it for the pies, stews and roasts. Beware: last dinner orders at 8.45pm on Friday, and 9.30am for breakfast, even on Sunday.
Access all areas: impossible in the narrow stairwells of the main house.
Added attractions: there is a tiny car park so the landlord will valet park your car. Also, the pub sent on items we left in our room, the first time that’s ever happened to me in the UK.
What we think: a classic, well-run pub full of history. I was so relaxed I proposed beside the fire (she accepted).
Bottom line: doubles £90-£120, B&B. A few rooms are available for a single night at weekends, otherwise you have to book Friday and Saturday. Our bill for two was £300, for two nights, including lunch and champagne.
