We've made some changes
to The Sunday Times
First impressions
An old coaching inn, with flagstone floors, dark wood panelling, sense of
permanence, huge restaurant and bar with open fires and a broad mix of
nationalities passing through to the islands.
Why it’s special
On the shores of Loch Fyne, close to the original seafood restaurant and the
Duke of Argyll’s home, Inveraray Castle. His ancestors knocked down
Inveraray to build the castle 250 years ago, and relocated the town next
door. They did a good job.
Hitting the sack
Our bedroom was warmly decorated in deep red, eminently comfy, with period and
repro furniture. Clean bathroom, understated tartan carpet and curtains.
Sampling the fare
Seafood pie or rib-eye steak £6 each; haggis, £4.95. Amiable Australian bar
staff quick with a pint, and busy food staff. Top black pudding and bacon
with the full Scottish breakfast. “If this hotel was in the Cotswolds, it
would charge double,” murmured my wife.
Added attractions
Horse trekking at the loch; woollen mill; Inveraray Castle open until the end
of the the month and the Loch Fyne shop and restaurant down the road. An
apothecary and whisky shop and, round the corner, Inveraray’s impressive
jail. Open to all.
What we think
You won’t find a better-value, better-run hotel in the western Highlands: and
thanks to Scotland the Best (Collins, £16.99) for the tip.
Bottom line
Thirteen rooms, from £60 B&B. Master rooms cost £75 with rolltop
baths and/or whirlpool baths. Suites cost £100-£120.
