A 17th-century coaching inn renovated to high standards in the rustic heart of Fife a few miles from St Andrews — popular with both golfers and gourmets.

Why it’s special

A harmonious blend of old and new, friendly and informal, with a creative Breton chef in the kitchen (ex-Waterside) and a decent range of malt whiskies in the bar. There’s a stone-walled function room with an open fire that looks like a set from Braveheart.

Hitting the sack

We liked the attic conversion rooms, all light wood floors and furnishings like a Swedish summer house, with wood-burning stoves and views over meadows. Goose down pillows and CD players. Light and airy bathroom with large corner tub and separate shower cubicle.

Sampling the fare

Intimate restaurant has delicious fish cakes with a Thai sauce (£16) and pan-fried loin of wild boar with a juniper berry sauce (£18.50). Varied and affordable wine list.

Added attractions

More than 20 golf courses, including the Old Course at St Andrews, within a 15-minute drive. Close to picturesque fishing villages and coastal paths. Also near by is “Scotland’s best kept secret”, an amazing Cold War underground command centre now open to the public.
