First impressions

India in Edinburgh (with a marble elephant thrown in). You’re greeted outside by a battered rickshaw, a three-tonne white marble elephant, and a large statue of Ganesh, the elephant god.

Why it’s special

The only Indian-themed hotel in the UK. Tastefully decorated — no flock wallpaper here — a replica of the Maharajah of Jaipur’s silver throne takes pride of place in the lounge. Raj-era photos adorn the wooden staircase and corridors.

Hitting the sack

The 17 spacious rooms, all with large bathrooms, are named instead of numbered — the suites are called Maharajah, Maharani and Bollywood.

Sampling the fare

Continental breakfast, together with samosas and pakoras, served on low tables in the lounge. For lunch or dinner, guests get a discount at the affiliated Raj restaurant in town.

Added attractions

The hotel, which is in a large Victorian house in east Edinburgh, offers a mehndhi service, painting decorative flower designs with henna paste on hands and feet.

Only the ground floor bedrooms are suitable for wheelchairs.
