First impressions

Glasgow has just rebranded itself as “Scotland with Style”, and this striking, copper-clad hotel in Argyle Street fits right in. The lobby is minimalist, with a bar to one side.

Why it’s special

Thirty yards from Central station, a two-minute, bag-laden stagger from the shops on Buchanan Street and the trendy boutiques of Princes Square, while the Merchant City district — Versace already there, Selfridges to come — is a ten-minute walk away.

Hitting the sack

No great surprises, the 250 rooms are standard fare, in three varieties — Nordic, Modern and City — differing in size and furnishings. The more basic rooms are actually the best — well lit with good use of natural wood and neutral colours.

Sampling the fare

Two restaurants: Collage serves Mediterranean dishes while the other is TaPaell’Ya, which offers tapas and paella (a classic Valenciana is £8.95). Lots of Brownie points for serving breakfast until 1pm on Sundays.

Added attractions

Guests can use the fitness centre for free.

Thirty rooms for disabled guests, some with showers for wheelchair entry.

The bottom line

B&B weekend rates start at £47.50pp a night, based on two sharing.
