Pure glitz: Stanley House's vast honeymoon suite
“This room stinks,” my daughter announced. Surely not. Probably just cleaning products, I told her. The man showing us our room chipped in: “Yes, it’s just been cleaned, so it’s probably that,” before disappearing quicker than you could say Flash.
But there was a funny smell, and as the eau de cleaning products died down, the odour it was masking grew. Drains. Not good when you’re spending £185 a night near Blackburn.
A phone call later, and after refusing the offer of some air freshener, we were upgraded to a vast honeymoon suite.
The hotel started to grow on me. But nothing on its website prepares you for the Jordan/ Peter Andre-style interior design. There are thick white carpets and gold sparkly-fringed lampshades, gilt-framed mirrors flanked by cherubs and diamanté chandeliers. We were particularly taken by the thrones in the lobby and bar like the ones Posh and Becks had at their wedding.
The 12 rooms are in an old stone manor house, the bar and restaurant in a converted barn. The hotel’s name (Stanley) and bar (Mr Fred’s) both sound like characters from the Rover’s Return, but don’t let this mislead you — the place is pure glitz and the waiting staff are predominantly French.
We were summoned from our thrones in Mr Fred’s, where we had the best nibbles this side of the M6: shavings of beetroot and sweet potato standing in a glass like paint brushes with four brightly coloured dips in small paint pots. We pushed through a wall of diamanté strings to a room full of paisley screen prints, tasseled curtains and swirly carpets.
An amuse-bouche of sardine rillettes with parsley foam arrived — is there anywhere the foam fetish hasn’t reached? And I ordered smoked salmon and blinis, followed by turbot, beautifully presented in an oblong plate with splodges of colours and textures. My two children had pasta with tomato sauce followed by ice-cream to share, all of which they ate, so it must have been good.
The clientele was young, northern and affluent, though you’d have to be at these prices. Our bill came to £70 and I’d had only one drink, no bottle of wine or dessert.
Breakfasting back among the glitter and tassels was a bit like revisiting a nightclub after the party’s over. Smoked haddock was as it should be, but the scrambled egg was oversalted and the waiter forgot our toast, though he was apologetic about it.
But one thing you can’t accuse Stanley House of is being boring.
Bottom line: Jeannette Hyde paid £185 for a double room, including breakfast.

hmmm I agree with last two we stayed there and altho I agree the prices are on the top side & the decor is different the overall effect is WOW ... the room we had was wonderful and complete luxury, the food was exceptional and we were very spoilt by the staff which were exactly as they should be no where to be seen when not needed but then appearing as if by magic when they were, really could not fault it
We also visit this type of hotel very regularly mainly in UK as our treat and this has to be up in our top 5
carrie , midlands, uk
The decor is horrendous, a tasteless mixture of styles but you have to love the audacity of the designer who obviously convinced someone to adopt his designs. The food is good although I was shocked when they tried to charge me over £6 for an orange juice and lemonade. Worth experiencing for the kitsch!

Totally agree with the other two readers! I read in disbelief what the reviewer had to say about the place my fiance & I adore!! Same as Michaela, we are getting married there this December & we couldn't find a better place, position & as for the hotel being camp & his view of the rooms, I think the reviewer needs glasses! The food is amazing, especially the Taster menu, we are huge foodies & have been to the likes of L'Enclume, let me tell you, this came very close! So ignore his ramblings & go for the true opinions!! It deserves 20/10!!

We have just returned from a overnight stay at Stanley House and also think you have done it a diservice. The decor of our room and the rest of the hotel was imaginative and sumptuous and we loved it. We had the Menu Gourmand ; 7 courses of the most wonderful food you could imagine, served by friendly and professional staff.
Having stayed at a number of boutique hotels throughout the country I think you would find it difficult to better this hotel .
Please note we are neither young or from the North !!!

I have eaten and stayed at Stanley House, in fact my husband I were so impressed by the decor, staff , service food that we had our wedding reception there in December. All our guests were 'blown away' by the experience. It is a totally unique and ecletic place to stay. Of course the clientelle will be young, affluent and northern - you are in the heart of Lancashire - what do you expect the sterility of some modern city centre!!! We couldn't be further from Jordan and Peter and my opinion is that you have done SH a diservice. It truly deserves 10/10 on all counts!!!!
