We've made some changes
to The Sunday Times

Arriving in the evening at the UK’s tallest building outside London, we had only one aim — checking out the Cloud 23 bar on the top floor of the hotel. The Hilton Manchester Deansgate, which opened last October, occupies the lower 23 floors of a 47-storey tower dubbed the “Canary Wharf of the north”. The bar, with its panoramic views of the city, can be accessed only in a special lift that is reached via a red carpet in the lobby.
The hotel advises guests to make a reservation since a maximum of 200 people are allowed in the bar at one time. I did, but my name never made it on the list, which was annoying. Eventually, however, we were allowed up and it was worth the wait — great views, a chilled vibe and equally chilled martinis delivered by a smiling Spanish waitress.
Returning to the ground floor and the large Podium restaurant, I was expecting to eat a rather bland, forgettable dinner. Wrong. The meal was delicious, from the black pudding starter to the scallops with orange and fried greens. Service was excellent — relaxed, friendly and professional.
Breakfast is also served in the Podium. “The best in Manchester,” said a sign, and I wouldn’t disagree. What a fantastic range, from bircher muesli, yoghurts, hams and cheeses, to full English fry-up with all the trimmings, and then some, and a juicer with which I made a DIY apple, carrot and ginger combo. Unfortunately, there was no time afterwards to enjoy the small gym, spa or lap pool.
There’s certainly much more good than bad at the hotel, but it’s not without niggles: lighting in the brown and beige-inspired bedroom, which smelt a tad stale, was far too dim. Soundproofing wasn’t good, either — a television in the neighbouring room was clearly audible through the interconnecting door, and clanking hallway doors were very loud. And for a new hotel, shouldn't wi-fi be available free in all rooms? Instead the internet costs a hefty £15 a day. Come on, it’s 2007.
Overall, though, my impression was positive, especially of the staff — young, friendly and enthusiastic. Next time I’m in Manchester I will definitely stay here again.
I came with high expectations of this high hotel. They were fulfilled.
