Stories and Songs on today's free French CD, with The Times
First impressions
A splendid neo-Gothic pile in 40 acres, five miles from Stratford-upon-Avon.
Imposing entrance hall with stained glass, coats of arms and a richly carved
fireplace.
Why it’s special
The wow factor. The extravagantly turreted building, parts of which date back
900 years, is made in three shades of bright stone, giving it an unusual
chequerboard appearance. It’s also said to be haunted.
Hitting the sack
Of the 48 rooms, five are suites. We liked the Kingmaker (four-poster bed),
Pritchard (tented ceiling) and the Victoria Garden Suite, which has arched
windows looking out over the little 12th-century chapel.
Sampling the fare
Dinner at £37.50pp included pan-fried foie gras with an onion parcel; Cornish
lamb with Mediterranean vegetables and lemon grass sauce.
Added attractions
You can land by helicopter, get married, and relax in the swimming pool and
hot tub with a pool-safe flute of champagne. See a play at the Royal
Shakespeare Theatre.
Access all areas
Wheelchair ramps, rooms available near the lift, and disabled lavatories.
Bottom line
B&B doubles from £79; B&B plus dinner £109. Prices are per
person, per night, based on two adults sharing.
What we think
Surprisingly reasonable, and an excellent choice for a romantic weekend.
