First Impressions

Just a pinch out of Clifden, this castellated fortress, set against the Twelve Bens mountains in the midst of Connemara countryside, looks the Gothic part with pointy windows and turrets.

Why it’s special

Puckish owner Brian Hughes is the master of good old fashioned Irish hospitality with a warmth missing from most other hotels. The hotel is also the base of the Connemara Safari (00 353 95 21071, www.walkingconnemara.com ), walking guides to the surrounding landscape.

Hitting the sack

Go past Gilbert the grey parrot (he will say “good night”) and up to comfy, spacious rooms with four-posters and great views over the grounds. Six new suites are to be added this summer.

Sampling the fare

Locally caught salmon, turbot, brill, Dory, lobsters, crabs, oysters and Connemara lamb — the best lamb I’ve ever tasted — and if you catch a fish, they’ll cook it for you. A good wine list and genial service.

Star quality

The Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, Robbie Keane, Bill Clinton, Gabriel Byrne and Peter O’Toole.

Added attractions

Brilliant atmosphere. After dinner Brian gets behind the piano and starts singing everything from trad airs to Elton John. My Bohemian Rhapsody is still talked about.
