We've made some changes
to The Sunday Times
First impressions
Former farmhouse, now a pub, beside a small quay at the end of a
single-track lane, on the estuary of the River Deben. It’s quiet (except on
Bank Holidays), unpretentious, and welcoming to young children and dogs.
Why it’s special
Splendid isolation right on the water, so watch the river traffic and
the bird life — avocet, oyster catcher, redshank, brent geese.
Hitting the sack
All three bedrooms refurbished, though not en suite.
Sampling the fare
Locally caught seafood (fish, lobster and crab) and game from local
shooting estates (partridge, pheasant, venison).
Star quality
Harbour master George Collins boxed the ears of the future King
Charles III when he deliberately disobeyed him. Prince Philip once stayed
(in Room 1) and bought George a pint.
Access all areas
Parking for the elderly and disabled but no wheelchair access to
bedrooms.
Added attraction
The restless river constantly turns up fossils at the water’s edge:
coprolite (fossilised animal dung), teeth of shark and woolly elephants.
What we think
Another world, far from the madding crowd. But don’t try to out-drink
the local gamekeeper; his legs are hollow.
Bottom line
B&B doubles from £70.
