Stories and Songs on today's free French CD, with The Times
Setting the scene
A Victorian shipping warehouse converted into a four-star hotel. Situated on
the rejuvenated Haven Marina promenade, it overlooks hundreds of bobbing
sailing ships and yachts. Coffee tables outside lend it a continental
atmosphere.
Why it’s special
Style and substance: contemporary art throughout.
Hitting the sack
The rooms combine “industrial” and Eastern design. Some feature exposed
brickwork and balconies, but all have waterfront views, large bathrooms, DVD
televisions, original artwork and teak and bamboo furniture. The beds are
comfortable with intricately carved Indian bedheads. Two penthouse suites
occupy the rooftop extension.
Sampling the fare
The brasserie offers an Italian-esque menu including delicious bresaola with
vegetable chutney (£5.85), roasted salmon with marjoram crème fraîche
(£8.95) and large side dishes with a good wine list and Bitburger lager on
tap. Big breakfasts.
Added attractions
The Salthouse has a beautiful affiliated 1930s “gentleman’s yacht”, the Meridies,
moored outside and available for fun river trips. Champagne food hampers
available.
Access all areas
There are two disabled rooms, but all forty-three bedrooms plus the
ground-floor lounge and restaurant are easy for wheelchair users.
The bottom line
B&B doubles from £90.
What we think
