The acquisition of GB Airways by easyJet will see another BA franchise disappear and will allow easyJet to claim a quarter of flight slots in and out of Gatwick.
GB Airways will continue to operate from its base at Gatwick until March 29 2008, after which the name will be scrapped and its 39 routes and 15 aircraft will be handed over to easyJet. Most of the GB Airways routes are to destinations in southern Europe and North Africa, and while these will be operated by easyJet in the months after the handover, the carrier will not guarantee the future of routes that are not successful.
EasyJet has announced that GB Airways customers with bookings after March 29 2008 will be flown by easyJet aircraft under its terms and conditions and will be notified to that effect.
GB Airways has been a franchise carrier of British Airways for 12 years and offers six flights from Manchester and five from Heathrow in addition to the Gatwick flights. The Heathrow slots are not included in the sale and the future of the Manchester slots, and airport from which easyJet does not currently operated, has yet to be decided.
The sale will push easyJet's Gatwick routes to 62 and strengthen the low cost carrier's presence at its largest hub, seeing it takeover 24 per cent of slots at Gatwick.
The acquisition also marks the continuing withdrawal of a British Airways presence from the West Sussex airport, although BA claims it is not abandoning Gatwick.
A spokeswoman for BA told Times Online Travel: "We still have 13 longhaul destinations out of Gatwick and 41 shorthaul destinations. It is a significant base for us. Gatwick has been about simplifying the programme of flying and increasing profitability, with a focus on leisure routes."
BA claims it turned down the opportunity to buy GB Airways outright, and has announced that customers will not lose out because it plans to start services from Heathrow and Gatwick to former GB AIrways destinations from March 30 2008, including Faro and Malaga.
British Airways chief executive Willie Walsh, said: “We had an option to buy GB Airways but we rejected it." Addressing concerns that BA is abandoning Gatwick, Walsh said: “We have a significant base at Gatwick and our focus will be on maintaining and developing it as an integral part of our business.”
An end to BA franchises
The sale of GB Airways coincides with another BA franchise announcement - from October 25 BA will cease it franchise with Scottish carrier Loganair and instead operate a codeshare agreement.
It means the Loganair name will carry on but the carrier will not fly under BA's livery. It also means customers will continue to be able to book the regional Scottish routes through BA.com, including many flights between Scotland's Highlands and islands.
Today's news follows a steady programme by BA is dispensing with its UK franchise airlines.
This weekend the BMED franchise with BA will end, following the sale of the carrier to Bmi earlier in the year, which coincided with the sale of BA's domestic and shorthaul operator, BA Connect to Flybe in March 2007. The only franchises being maintained by BA are with foreign carriers - Sunair in Scandinavia and Comair in South Africa.
Since Easyjet have bought GB Airways, I have been trying to find out if there is any plans for Winter Flights 2008/2009 from Gatwick Airport to Tenerife South under the Easyjet brand.
As it is proving difficult to obtain this information, can you help ?

I'm still, after 3 'phone calls to Easyjet and of course I've 'phoned BA at the beginning, waiting for some sort of comfirmation that I still have a flight at all. No one seems interested in the passengers...or the fact that we've paid for seats and meals. Easyjey should honour what passengers paid for originally.
I get a feeling I'll get to the check in desk and I'll have nothing to show I've paid. BA obviously have my money BUT do I still have a flight, seat and meal??
Not good enough BA!

We booked using airmiles in September 07 to go to Malta in August 08. We then booked two villas for the two weeks. We were only told yesterday of the sale and have not been told if Easyjet will honour the times and dates. If they don't then we will lose out. I am tempted to cancel the whole thing and let the insurance company fight it out with BA.

Booked flights to Gibralta in Nov 07, no information was given that EJ were taking over, if i had know this i would have booked with BA direct. Unable to change plans i have no choice but to fly EJ. I have paid for a flight with good service. Now i get nothing for the same price. How can this be allowed. What if anything is being done about this.

We bought two CLUB class tickets from Gatwick to Mykanos in June from BA. We are now being informed that, "at no extra cost", we now have an Easyjet flight instead, which is obviously completely incomparible and unacceptable. The equivalent Easyjet flight on line in less than half the price if I book it now!! How can this possibly be acceptable and it is certainly not ethical ? We can get a refund, but that is hardly the point!
We are going to cancel boths flights, and indeed the hotel in Santorini, and we will book with neither Easyjet or BA, probably never again!!!
Andrew Smith, Bristol,
I searched online at the beginning of November for flights to Paphos for 4 adults and a baby for Sept. 2008 . B . A . appeared to be the best option ( flight times , cost , meals , seat selecting , etc. ) All were important as it is not easy at the best of times flying with a young baby . I booked the flights and paid in full whilst at the same time joining the B A Executive Club as a group to collect air miles etc for the future. To my dismay i received an e mail in Dec to say that Easyjet were buying G B A and offering the option to click to transfer to Easyjet when the sale was complete at the SAME price ( WONDERFUL ! No Seat . No meal , Stampede dash for your seats ) , or click for a full refund which i did . I was told that the sale would be comp. in a few weeks and at that point i would get my money back . I have booked now with X L ( tried and tested ) , but B A have my money in their bank earning interest , COME ON B A . Treat your customers with respect , not disdain !!!

I booked and paid BA to paphos for May 08 in Nov 07. Its now too late to change travel plans but Im happy to go eayjet if they honour my original purchase contract & flight schedule - If this is a share aquisition deal this must be the case ? who protects booked and paid passenger interests ?

I have booked with GB airways for June going to Paphos from
Manchester. We certainly do not wish to fly with Easyjet. I would like to know when we are going to get a full refund so we can book with another airline. I have written to BA in November and had no reply. If anyone could give me the address of Easyjet so I could write to them. By the time we get a full refund there will be no places available to enable us to fly with a decent airline. I have been in contact with the travel agent in which we have booked and they are a complete waste of time - do not seem to no what is going on.

We organise a pensioners walking group. We booked in July and subsequently paid BA for 34 tickets to travel toTenerife via GB Airways for a walking holiday in the Western Canaries during May 2008. We've been making further arrangements for onward travel and accommodation which depend on the schedule given us by BA. Now we don't know what EasyJet will do about the departure and return times which makes it impossible for us to rely on them. I know that we can get a refund but we've spent quite a lot of money already in organising the trip.
We entered into a contract with BA. How are we supposed to continue when neither BA nor Easyjet will tell us what what is going to happen? BA is surely responsible for honouring the contract that they made with us. To simply wash their hands of it because of this sale seems to us to be an example of unfair trading. The OFT ought to become involved.

I booked a flight with GB Airways for 4 adults to Madeira. I made this arrangement and paid £751 up front for a return flight in April 2008. Whilst I understand that business is business I am unhappy with paying for British Airways standards but receiving EasyJet instead.
I have asked for a full refund and have booked with XL instead but I will not receive the promised full refund till March or later. We shall see.......!

I booked to fly to Gran Canaria from Gatwick, and will fly back early April. Question is, will we fly out on a GB Airways plane and fly back in Easyjet? How do I know that they will continue to do that route? We were told by e-mail that we would hear from Easyjet/GB Airways within 8 weeks of the e-mail they sent. Well no news as yet. We should be offered a full refund so we can make alternative flight plans. After all we have accommodation booked. Not sure if I want to experience a 4 hour flight on Easyjet, and have no meals or drinks included.

I booked flights from Edinburgh via Gatwick to Mykonos for June 2008 - I booked in June 2007 - incorporating GB Airways Club Europe product and using up some BA Miles for part of the tickets. Goodness know how they will handle that when they eventually contact me. I have no idea how the Edinburgh/Gatwick connections will work - will I be kept on BA or will they also be transferred to easyjet? I'll certainly lose the ability to through-check myself and my baggage.
I don't mind the easyjet concept for short, direct journeys, but this one could now become more trouble than its worth. However, there is no alternative airline whatsoever, so I just have to hope they keep the route and sort out dome sort of pro-rate refund...
Chris Sagar, Edinburgh,
I had only made my flight booking 48 hours prior to finding out about the Easyjet buyout of GB airways. BA said I could NOT get a refund until the sale is completed and Easyjey will contact us. If we want to make alternative arrangements, I am given to understand that Easyjet will give us a refund. As we ALWAYS travel Business Class (and no-one at Easyjet can say that they will run a business class - I do doubt they will) I would like to have had my money returned immediately. I do not relish having to wait for Easyjet to 'contact' me to arrange this and as I paid my money to BA, I would expect BA to refund our money (which they will not be doing). Who has had the benefit of my £700+ that I paid at the time of booking? Not me - that's for sure. I think BA have handled my queries in a very slapdash manner. I am a member of their Executive Club and have a total of 54,000 BA airmiles, which is NOT transferrable to another airline.
I we wanted to travel with Easyjet, we would have done so
Lin Clarke, New Romney, Kent
I booked months ago with GB Airways to fly to Madeira next June and can't get refund until sale gone through. I was told it would be finalised early December - still not done. We should be able to get refund now so we can book flights with TAP as I will never fly with Easyjet. Too many of my relatives, friends and colleagues have been let down with them.
Linda Smith, Peterborough, England
If easyjet are not flying out of Manchester to Paphos why are BA(under GB airways) still selling flights for this route for the summer 2008. I and my family and friends have all booked several flights between April and July, when are we to find out if we still have flights?
A Naisbitt, Cheshire,
We have three Club seats booked from Gatwick to Sharm El Sheikh in May. We are certainly not going to spend that sort of money and fly Easyjet. Like many others we need our refund so we can rebook on other carriers but the prices continue to rise. I am appalled that you can still book BA business class seats on this flight despite the fact that there will be no such class. We are in urgent need of some customer service.
Phil Warren, Ascot,
I booked my flight to Crete from Manchester in July. At the same time I booked a rental car and have also booked and paid for the accommodation in Crete. Three of us will make our annual trip to Crete.
I note that BA are stil acceptings bokings for June. My concern is having booked to fly from Mancheter, booked . Easy jet have written nothng about flying from Manchester. They currently do not fly from Manchester.
We always book 12-11 months ahead. The advance booking rates are cheaper.

I hope that easyjet are still running the flight to crete in june, as i have booked over 25 places for people to go to my 50th party. flying with GB Airway over the past few years have been one of the best we have flown with. I hope that the service dosn't suffer with the take over by easyjet. the wait to see if the flights are still going is unfair, as a large group it might be hard to find another flight for the same times. more upto date information is need.

We booked flights from Gatwick to Malta for August 2008, we could have gone with Ryanair from Luton which is only a five minute drive for us but we did not want to fly with a budget airline, what a mistake only 5 days after booking we received the dreaded email regarding easyjet. We were told we could not get a refund until the sale was complete. We also noticed that GB was still selling flights to malta after the end of March 2008 cut off, showing they are more than happy to take customers money even though they would not be providing the service. We have emailed GB on a number of occasions regarding our refund and no one gets back to you. There customer service skills are nil. Come on GB when are you going to issue refunds?!
Jill Hurt, Harpenden, Herts
We have booked to fly to Paphos in June, how long before we know whether we are automatically transfered? will it be cheaper? The same day and time flights? Meals on board?
We have not booked through an agent, but direct through BA.
Any answers please?

I have booked two lots of flights going to paphos in april and september, do we still get the same service/ drinks and food also comfortable seating. S REpath Surrey

BA should keep the routes out of Manchester as it is obvious EasyJet do not want to locate to the capital of the North.
Please BA keep the planes flying from Manchester
Jane, Manchester,
I booked in june this year to fly to paphos next may, so what happens now do I have to re book or will easy jet still fly the same time and route
Neil Carter, canvey Island, Essex
We are booked on a flight to Malta From Manchester next May, when will be get a refund? will the route be operated by easyjet? All this leaves people who have prebooked left in limbo for months potentialy whilst they keep our money. In the meantime the cost of flights with other operators will rise for those who can only go in school holidays. I booked a BA flight so I do not have to fight for a seat with three kids in tow, no thanks Easyjet.
Ruth Clark, Bolton, UK
Please please fly to and from Montpellier!!!
Helen Byrne, Mpntpellier, France
Come on BA - keep flying from Manchester to Paphos. This is a great service with a good carrier and doesn't operate the scrum that is a hazardous part of flying with EasyJet.
Bill Ritson Hogg, Darlington, UK
I've flown GB Airways many times and always been impressed by the standard of service. I also fly easyjet and they are certainly OK but not as competitively priced as BA/GB at peak times. I almost think of easyjet as mainstream not "no frills" as far as pricing is concerned. I'm only glad Ryanair isn't involved because they are the WORST airline ever and I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole.
Nick Blades, Northleach, UK
As a regular flyer to Madeira with GB Airways, I dread the thought of now having to travel for 3 1/2 hours on an orange bus with my knees under my chin. Please BA make this one of the routes you carry on flying. TAP Air looks more inviting than easijet.
Alan Brooks, Bexley, UK
It is in fact Mark Ashbey who is incorrect. GB Airways may not fly from Manchester and Heathrow to Gibraltar where he lives but they do maintain a schedule to destinations such as Tenerife and Malta.
David Drakes, Staines, U
This is sad news. I enjoyed using GB Airways they offered an excellent standard of service. Despite being a franchise it always felt as good (sometimes better) than BA proper.
peter gann, London,
"GB Airways...offers six flights from Manchester and five from Heathrow in addition to the Gatwick flights." This is incorrect, I'm afraid. The Manchester and Heathrow flights ceased long ago.
