The owners of a half-built hotel on a ridge overlooking one of Majorca's quieter resorts say they will transform the complex into Spain's finest hotel
An Investment company, the Wingfield Corporation, has bought the Sa Talaia complex in Port de Soller, pictured, where work started in 1996 but stopped six years later because of planning and financial problems.
Work on the site will take another two years, with the aim to create the "best and most luxurious hotel" not only in Mallorca but the whole of Spain, say the new owners.
The property will be managed by the Jumeriah group, the Dubai-based hotel operator which manages the iconic Burj-al Arab "seven-star" hotel in Dubai, as well as hotels in London and New York.
In 2005, Jumeirah announced an ambitious plan to own or manage 40 luxurious hotels at home and abroad within five years.
The Majorcan purchase was completed after various agreements with Sóller Town Hall (modification of planning permits etc. in exchange for payment of £650,000 by Wingfield to be used in three muncipal projects).
Port de Soller is only 10 miles from Deia, home to La Residencia, the grand dame of Majorca's hotels once owned by Richard Branson. In the resort itself, two hotels have rebranded as boutiques in the past year, making Port de Soller and neighbouring Soller two of the most attractive resorts on the island.
