SILVER COMET TRAIL

Think of going on an American road trip and the chances are you'll imagine doing it by car. Probably a vast saloon number that makes up in style what it lacks in fuel efficiency.

America is the land of the car. So a trail where vehicles are banned, that spans several counties in the southern state of Georgia and ends in the neighbouring state of Alabama, is a welcome change.

The Silver Comet Trail encourages emission-free, non-motorised methods of travel from Rollerblades to bicycles, skateboards and horses. You can amble along its 61 miles of paved track that cross rivers, farmland and more than a few swamps for nothing.

Built on abandoned railway lines, one of the trail's advantages is that it is relatively flat and there is good wheelchair access. Until 1969, its main section was a working railway, hosting the Silver Comet Passenger service, which linked one end of Georgia with the other.

Today it is a haven for wildlife, home to turtles and lizards, as well as birds, butterflies and deer. It is a reminder of the diverse wildlife and stunning scenery in the southern states - and that you don't need a car to enjoy it.
