AMBIENCE The Institut de Beaute is essentially just that. There is no gym, sauna or whirlpool bath. Food: None to speak of, bar an array of delicious herbal teas.

EXPERIENCE Very efficient. My treatment started promptly and was very carefully done by Chloe, my French-speaking therapist. A vague knowledge of French would be helpful. I had an Imperiale Massage, a 60-minute full, no-nonsense, whole body massage with gallons of Creme Imperiale, a classic Guerlain scent.

FOOD None to speak of, bar an array of delicious herbal teas.

IN CROWD With its interconnecting rooms and neighbouring footbaths, it would be perfect for a visit with a girlfriend or sister. I saw various chic women taking a break from their offices for a spot of Creme Imperiale.
