The mission To destress after writing a book. Five months hunched over my laptop and I’m barely able to turn my neck.
Ambience Still a whiff of sanatorium about the place; a hang-over from its days as a fitness farm. Back then it was lemon and water for breakfast, followed by a brisk walk. It still has the feel of somewhere you go for health reasons rather than pampering. There’s a wide range of fitness classes and rooms to lounge in, as well as a recently opened multimillion-pound thermal spa.
A policy of encouraging guests to wear their towelling robe at all times, even during meals, unsettled me. I prefer to dress for dinner.
Quality of experience My treatment was the best thing, a one-and-a-half-hour massage, called Li’Tya Marta, inspired by indigenous Australian techniques. Dubious about the words “realign energy flow” and worried that it would make my neck worse, I was proved wrong.
Less impressive was the thermal spa, consisting of saunas and steam rooms with names such as Volcanic Salt Bath, Colour-flow Cave and Rose Sauna. Fine, if you like this sort of thing. I found that although they all smelt different, they do the same thing and there were only so many places I could sit and sweat before I craved fresh air. The whole place was a tad overheated – probably to enable lolling around in robes – and I felt much better after I had escaped for a walk.
Products Li’Tya products, buy them here: www.litya.com. Never heard of them, but they did the job and I smelt divine afterwards.
Food Liked the policy of having breakfast in bed, but supper was disappointing. Healthy, but a bit like bad pub food. Drinking, though not forbidden, is not encouraged. I couldn’t get my hands on a gin and tonic for love or money.
In-crowd Mothers and daughters treating themselves and women of a certain age kick-starting their health regimen. A handful of men skulked around, exchanging hangdog expressions.
Wallet watch There’s a high turnover of guests, which allows relatively low prices. They start from £110 per person, per night. Most weekends an average of 180 people are housed in the Victorian country house. You won’t realise this until mealtimes when there is a shift system and you are given an allotted time.

Did Anna Shepard stay at a different spa to the one I have just returned from?! It was my 3rd visit, and Im just about to book my 4th! I cannot find a single criticism about the place - its wonderful! I always come back from a 2/3 night stay feeling like Ive had a fortnights holiay! Pure heaven!

I have just returned from an overnight stay at Ragdale my third visit in a year and i cannot fault the place, the surroundings are beautiful, the staff friendly and helpful, the new thermal spa excellent, and the food healthy but very tasty, I felt relaxed and sad to leave at the end of my stay.
Miss L Morris, Leicester,
I have just returned from a 3 day break at Ragdale Hall, thoroughly pampered and refreshed. I failed miserably to find any trace of a "sanitorium" but found plenty of warmth, comfort and beautiful surroundings. The food in the dining room was excellent (no chance of weight loss in my case) and the service impeccible. Yes, times were indicated for meals, but requests to change these proved no problem and dress in the evening was overwhelmingly smart casual. Treatments were excellent and I liked the fact that "product sales" pushing by therapists is not allowed. We loved the new spa and pool area. Wine at dinner was not discouraged at all and if the writer can't manage without a G & T I suggests she goes to a country house hotel next time since it seems as if she was trying to compare Ragdale Hall to one of these!

Funnily enough I read Anna Shepards piece whilst chilling out in one of Ragdale's lovely loungesand didn't recognise her description of the place at all. l fully endorse Mrs Nevile's points about Ragdale Hall, it is a wonderful place. Anna Shepard's piece did not tally with my experience at all with one exception - I agree that the treatments are excellent. I first went to Ragdale to get some perspective back after my mum was diagnosed and successfully (so far) for breast cancer 5 years ago. It was wonderful and the staff were so kind from the second I walked through the door. Nothing was too much trouble and no question too small to answer. Indeed when mum got sorted out with her prosthesis we went together and had a lovely weekend with beautiful surroundings, excellent tasty food (not in the slightest bit 'good-for-you') and comfy bedrooms.
I would encourage anyone to try Ragdale out for themselves and ignore Anna Shepard's 'pub grub' , sanatorium slurs.
katie oliver, Skipton, U.K.
Having visited Ragdale Hall for the past 4-5 years I was vert taken aback to read Anna Shepard's article. Ragdale is set in beautiful countryside and the ambience is warm, comfortable, peaceful and very stylish. I'm not sure which sanitorium's Anna has visited (if any) which prompted her to remark 'there is still a whiff of a sanitorium about the place'. This is totally untrue.
Her comment about a 'policy' of encouraging guests to wear their towelling robe at all times is again untrue. Whilst it makes sense to wear a gown during the day, I have never been encouraged to wear it at tall times, and myself and friends have always dressed to go to dinner in the evening. In fact the majority of guests do. Another comment that drinking is not encouraged does not quite reflect the true situation. Of course they dont encourage people to drink but they have an extensive wine list that is available all day in the lounge cafe and at both lunch and dinner. A very unfair article.
