We are seeking some winter sun on Langkawi in February. Where would you suggest we eat, as we are keen to venture beyond our resort?David Markham, Hull

A Sunday Times travel expert responds: The setting and atmosphere of the Nam Restaurant (00 60 4 955 4791, www.bontonresort.com.my ) are idyllic: in an old coconut grove looking out over a freshwater lagoon. Sunsets here are suburb. It’s renowned for excellent Straits Chinese cuisine, and also serves other Asian cuisine too, and their signature ‘dish’ is the Nyonya Platter (about £9, other mains from £3) - a mammoth meal served on a banana leaf and lacquer tray.

For a beautiful beachfront setting, you can’t beat the Lighthouse Restaurant, at one end of Pantai Tengan beach. The characterful building has a lovely first floor veranda for fine dining, or you can eat more informally at an outside table with sand between your toes. Either way, the Malay and Mediterranean dishes are well-presented and great value.

The Pavilion restaurant is the star attraction of the exclusive Datai (00 604 959 2500, www.datai.com ) resort hotel. Its remote setting mean that a visit here requires a taxi, but the fabulous location and exquisite food make a journey well worthwhile. This thatched terrace restaurant sits high in the forest canopy and serves terrific Thai and Asian cuisine. ).

You should also look out for the Hole in the Wall Fish farm & Restaurant on the Kilim River, where of course the fish is fresh, and the Red Tomato Garden Cafe Jalan Pantai Cenang (00 60 4 955 9118) for great pizzas.
