British Airways will move more flights to Heathrow’s T5 on June 5, the airline announced today, saying that the troubled terminal was now “working well”.
The move will include its flagship services to New York JFK. The airline flies on the route eight times a day from Heathrow and the services are one of carrier’s biggest moneyspinners, with some analysts believing they represent up to 80% of its annual profit.
Daily services to Abuja, Bangalore, Beijing, Cairo, Cape Town, Lagos and Phoenix will also move on the same day. In total, the services amount to one quarter of BA’s long-haul flights operating out of terminal 4.
Willie Walsh, British Airways' chief executive, said: "We have taken this decision in the interests of customers, who remain our priority at all times. Terminal 5 is now working well, and we are pleased we can confirm our plan to move in some additional flights on June 5."
New York passengers face some confusion as BA’s Newark services will remain at terminal 4 until further notice. Flights to 40 other long-haul destinations will also continue to operate from terminal 4 for the time being, including services to Bangkok, Chicago, Houston, Singapore, Sydney and Washington.
Services to Hong Kong, Johannesburg, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco, Tokyo and Vancouver already operate from terminal 5.
BAA’s chief executive, Colin Matthews, added: "I am pleased that we have reached this decision jointly. BAA and BA have worked together effectively to resolve the initial problems at T5, and to plan this next move.
"We continue to work together intensively to complete the migration of the remaining long haul services as soon as is practicable."
Both Walsh and Matthews were forced to appear before committee of MPs earlier this week and were asked to explain the fiasco surrounding the move into T5. Walsh admitted to the Transport Select Committee that the airline pressed ahead with the transfer of flights despite knowing of problems before the move, which he agreed was “a disaster”.
