Winter sports enthusiasts say that BBC chiefs have ruined Ski Sunday by attempting to revamp the long-running show as “Top Gear in the snow”.
The new series concentrates on Alpine travel and lifestyle features, and includes a celebrity skiing challenge with guests such as Tara Palmer-Tomkinson. The competitive downhill action has been reduced to barely ten minutes.
Skiing fans who relied on the BBC for full slalom and downhill coverage, including the traditional plucky British failure and spectacular wipeouts, are furious.
Tomorrow night’s programme features its new presenter, the former Olympic skier Graham Bell, searching for brown bears in a park near the Dolomites. Digital viewers can press the red button for World Cup slalom action from Zagreb.
The BBC said that World Cup skiing was a “niche” interest. The new show is designed to broaden the audience from Britain’s 1.5 million regular skiers to three million viewers. The revamped programme, however, has attracted an average audience of only 1.5 million viewers. On one occasion viewing figures fell to 1.1 million.
David Vine, presenter for most of the show’s 30-year run, has switched off. “It’s a travesty,” he said. “If the BBC desire to do a Top Gear in the snow, fair enough, but don’t call it Ski Sunday or use the programme’s famous anthem.”
Among the complaints on the BBC website, one viewer wrote: “The BBC used to get people interested in winter sports by showing incredible races complemented with intelligent race commentary.”
The axe was hovering over Top Gear before the car-test format was turned into a stunt-filled Sunday night BBC Two entertainment show starring Jeremy Clarkson.
Ski Sunday had to change, Bell argues. “We have to appeal to the non-skiers first and foremost, and if that means using celebrities then bring them on. If we can encourage even 2 per cent of our viewers to try skiing or snowboarding then we will make a massively positive impact on the UK ski industry. We are clearly the Marmite of sports programmes right now. Hardcore skiers should really count themselves lucky to have so much access to what is in real terms a minority sport in the UK,” he said.
Philip Bernie, head of BBC TV Sport Editorial, said: “The lack of a top-rank British competitor means the racing has become a niche event. Our reports on snowboarding in Japan and Australia are attracting younger viewers and we are tapping into great interest in the Alpines as a leisure destination.” There was more World Cup coverage than ever “behind the red button”, Mr Bernie added.
Tomorrow’s celebrity skier is Frank Gardner, the BBC security correspondent confined to a wheelchair after being shot in Saudi Arabia. Mr Gardner takes the slalom challenge at the Italian resort of Courmayeur using a specially adapted chair called a “sitski”.
He said: “It’s basically a wheelchair without wheels, a moulded plastic bucket mounted on a spring, attached to a racing ski. In each hand I hold an ‘outrigger’ — a collapsible mini-ski on the end of a pole to help me balance and steer down the mountain.”

As a well practiced intermediate skier with about thirty ski trips under my belt I was excited to see the new Ski Sunday, it was fresh, interesting and fun to watch. Skiing and Snowboarding are such fantastic and enlightening hobby/sports that I can't believe Ski Sunday was not revamped years ago in order to bring in a new audience, the show gives a good insite into alpine locations, and places where you would not think to go. Excellent show and Bell and Leigh are great, the show was not very well advertised as I did not even realize it had been revamped, I reckon next year the shows viewing figures will start to rocket as word gets out about this seasons show. There is plenty of Slalom and Grand Slalom coverage on Sunday morning and to be honest as much as I like Slalom and Downhill it can get a little repetitive.

As a non-skier I find the new format of the show far better than the old, which, basically to the untrained eye, you saw the same pictures over and over again; not being able to distinguish where one skier lost 100th of a second against an opponents time. Well done Bell and Leigh they know what they are doing and make it that much more interesting.
Derek, Sheffield,
Not Ski Sunday...well...not as we know it...But a great show nonetheless.
Indeed, it may be tailored towards the 'Topgear' viewer - but anything that increases interest in snow sports is a good thing in my mind.
I've even started watching more snowsports...albeit on alternative channels - BBC presenters and production values fantastic as always....Eurosport, sadly is not.

The people who are moaning here are probably snowboard haters, times have changed, welcome to the 21st century, boarders and skiiers now talk to each other. I think that the new format is fantastic, if you want to watch racing, get Eurosport , if you wnat to open your mind watch Ski Sunday. Ed Leigh and Graham Bel l compliment each other well, granted, it's has an element of 'holiday' it's very much about entertainment more than it is about serious skiing- but I like it. I particularly like the opening sequence, I'm guessing that will took a while to film. Keep it up.
Tristan , Newbury,
I have recommended the show far and wide. It's the best view over the weekend. As a skier and a traveller, it has broadened my horizons. European skiers and boarders with definitely look to book further afield after having had a taste of pastures new!

Fantastic show! The new format really makes a virtue of the huge potential of the Ski Sunday heritage and hauls it, at last, into the 21st centruy. Pure ski racing is indeed "niche' - my family and friends love this, whether skiers or not because it's great to get tips from Graham Bell (via the celebs feature), see another aspect the Alps, and enjoy watching the reports from all around the world - I never knew you could go snowboarding in Australia!
And the ice diving was something else... It's human nature to dislike change but as Jack Welch said "if you don't change, you go backwards."
P. Walnuts, Boston, Lincs
Ski Sunday's past weakness was that it was poor at setting context. The show would dive straight into the race events with very little background presentation about the overall competition, standings and progress. More information about the locations, racers, races, plus skiing & boarding tips/hints for joe public and segments on the Alpine geography would have increased the value and enjoyment of the show. But watching someone's train journey to outer-somewhere-or-other to show us how cold they can get is just padding that can be left out.
Ecgbert, Sheffield,
Great show. I have a few fleeting memories of Ski Sunday from the early '90s but would never watch more than 10/15 mins. Now it's become a regular Sunday evening feature for myself, wife and 2 young kids. Enjoyable coverage from New Zealand, Japan etc. For those who don't like it, switch it off.
Dan, Zurich,
Skiers should be glad they get a mention at all- there are a lot of sports that wish they got even1% of the 10minutes coverage of 'actual' sking that is being moaned about
DAniel, Loughborough, UK
We love the new formatt show. Very entertaining and inspirational. It's become a programme we look forward to watching - and there aren't many of those on the tv schedule these days. On the other hand, I don't think the celebrities add anything to the show. In fact, just as with Top Gear, when the celebrity challenge comes on, we go out and switch the kettle on.
David Evans, Coleford, Gloucestershire
I think there needs to be a balance... It makes huge sense to try to attract new viewers and potential future skiers and snowboarders, as well as trying to keep the existing adrenaline junkies happy. In France, none of the major TV Channels do any major coverage of the Alpine disciplines until their is a major event on i.e the Olympics; weekend to weekend coverage is left to Eurosport... I guess when you have the mountains, you'd much rather be doing it than watching it. That said, regular coverage of snowboard half-pipe, big air and boarder cross events, along with free-ride ski equivalents, and a smattering of the best of downhill, slalom, giant and super-g would keep most people happy... If you can add in a few celebrities wiping at speed, that could be mildly amusing!
Skiguru, London,
I'm a non-skier but the new format doesn't appeal to me. Ski Sunday has been ruined - it used to be a well presented top sports programme, now it's just juvenil banter.
Steve Allen, Bradford, UK
This is now a holiday show, a pointless waste of money. I hope channel 4 bid for the coverage as the bbc has once again lost the plot.
