Letter to Puzzle Loving Friend: “Here’s a sight to behold: one old ruin propping up another. I am writing this while leaning against the ruined cloisters of an abbey founded during the 13th century. Its Cistercian life ended in 1539, but prior to that it attracted droves of pilgrims to view its famous relic – reputedly a phial of Christ’s blood. “ ‘By Goddes precious herte, and by his nailes,/And by the blood of Crist...’ ”, thus did it feature in one of Britain’s most noted literary works.
“Locally, there are plenty of things to see and places to visit. I am keen to check out a church in a village three miles north-northeast: one of its windows contains glass rescued from here; another is the work of a 20th-century architect whose “signature” was a wild strawberry. And the nearby manor house, noted for its garden in the Arts and Crafts style, sounds most intriguing.
“The fine weather is making me lazy – so I shall not be walking the national trail that commences in a town five miles northeast of the manor. An author lived on its outskirts, and it was there that he started work on a novel (imaginatively inspired by the Orient-Express), published in 1932. However, I shall be visiting a village (noted for its 14th-century threshing barn), 10 miles northwest of this abbey. A second author, born locally in 1907, used it (together with an adjacent village) as the thinly veiled setting for a novel, published in 1946, about rural goings-on. The village church, of 12th-century origin, also features in a poem; one of the village rectors later became an archbishop (“This hand hath offended,” I am reminded). I may even walk to the nearby Iron Age hillfort, the scene of a 1st-century massacre.
“But then again, I may just sit here at the abbey; write postcards; perhaps nod off for five minutes – a tad longer than it will take you to fathom where I am, ruinously content.”
