We are visiting New York in early August and would like to take our 10 and 15-year-old children to a jazz club. Can you recommend any that would be suitable for the whole family? Alan Burrows, by email
Julia Brookes of Times Travel's Readers' Forum responds: Your first stop should be the Big Apple Jazz Centre and EZ’s Woodshed in Harlem (2236 7th Ave, 131st/132nd streets), which celebrates all things relating to NY jazz, both past and present. It features live jazz daily for all ages (no alcohol), and has an array of jazz memorabilia. The staff are also happy to point out the best local jazz events, which in August would include seeing famous musicians such as Jimmy Heath or Houston Person for free at Grant’s Tomb (Riverside Drive at West 122nd St) on Wednesday evenings. You would also be welcome in any of the big clubs such as the Village Vanguard since there are no age restrictions. Restaurants with live jazz are another solution. Jazz Standard is attached to a good barbecue restaurant, while the Blue Note has a Sunday brunch session that would be ideal.
