Early this year, I booked a holiday for my family in New York. But between booking and sorting out our travel insurance, my son’s partner became pregnant. While this is good news, it is proving difficult to arrange suitable insurance as she will be about 30 weeks pregnant at the time of travel. Can you help? Paul Platts, Bracknell, Berks

It is difficult to find insurance for someone in such an advanced state of pregnancy, but we’ve found a policy with PHA Travel Club (0870 7700943, www.phatravel.com) which will insure her up to the 32nd week of pregnancy, for one week to the US, from £33. She must not, however, be into her 32nd week of pregnancy by the time she returns.

Most policies will cover women only until their 28th week of pregnancy (even less for a multiple pregnancy). This means that while they can claim for losses unrelated to pregnancy, they would not be covered if they had to cancel their holiday or incurred losses in connection with their condition. Before you book travel insurance, however, it’s important to check with your airline whether it will carry your son’s partner. Most airlines carry pregnant women up to 28 weeks (less for multiple pregnancies). After that a doctor’s certificate is usually required.
